Joe Lacob Says Warriors Will Do 'Whatever It Takes' to Retain Stephen Curry
Stephen Curry is surely going to cash in as a free agent this summer, but Golden State Warriors co-owner Joe Lacob doesn't anticipate the two-time MVP will go anywhere.
Speaking to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, Lacob said retaining Curry is a priority.
"We're going to do whatever it takes to keep Steph here and happy," he said. "I know he wants to be here, and we want him here. I do not anticipate any issues with him staying."
The Warriors have a lot of key roster decisions to make this summer. Curry is an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career. Kevin Durant, the 2017 NBA Finals MVP, can opt out of the two-year deal he signed last summer.
Curry has given no indication he intends to leave the Warriors.
"Like I've said from Day 1, when I was first asked about free agency, this is a perfect place to play," he told Kawakami in January. "Bay Area fans are amazing, our organization’s amazing, we've put together an amazing team that's competing for championships every year. There's really no reason that I can see right now that would draw me elsewhere."
Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston are also eligible for extensions and could command more money than the Warriors are willing or able to offer.
Curry is eligible for a maximum extension worth $205 million over five years. He's been a bargain for the Warriors, playing under a four-year, $44 million deal signed in 2012—before the league's salary cap exploded thanks to new television contracts—prior to winning two league MVP awards, including the first unanimous selection in NBA history.
