First off I want to start off this article with my pure love for Al Davis and everything he's done for the Oakland Raiders, the AFL and NFL, and the sport in general for everyone.

I grew up an Oakland Raiders fan and have always loved an owner who really cared about his team and had the football background and mind to actually be a legitimate person with experience and qualifications to make a football decision.

People commonly speak of Al Davis in terms of the game passing him by. This is farthest from the truth. It's not that the game has passed him by, the biggest issue with Al Davis is his managerial style is outdated.

It's no longer successful for a sports franchise to be run from the top down with no questions asked. Al has to let go similar to George Steinbrenner and the Yankees. Years ago Steinbrenner hired Brian Cashman as GM and just recently handed the team to his sons and they allow the GM to make the key baseball decisions.

Al Davis is going to have to relinquish control to a GM like Brian Cashman who can make all the decisions but still get some input from the boss. Eventually Al Davis will give full control to his son Mark and he'll have to have a GM in place who will have full control of the franchise.

This will happen. I'm a Yankees fan and never thought it would happen with George who for several years put together expensive squads who couldn't play when it mattered and he didn't have a baseball background. Steinbrenner obviously always had a GM, but for the most part that GM was a GM with his cajones in Steinbrenner's desk. He finally allowed Cashman the true power in the baseball draft to do what he wanted and the Yankees minor league system is one of the best in baseball.

Al will eventually hire a GM who'll have the full authority to make all football decisions and Al will have dialogue with the GM, but ultimately the decision will fall on the GM.

I just hope this happens soon because the sad part of watching this whole mess is looking at all of the talented players on this squad and watching them under perform each week.
