Manchester United Transfer News: Sergej Milinkovic-Savic Scouted, Latest Rumours

Manchester United reportedly had a scout in attendance to watch Napoli's 3-0 win over Lazio on Sunday to watch Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

That's according to Simone Lorini of TuttoMercatoWeb, who reported the midfielder is also attracting interest from Chelsea, Juventus and AC Milan.

Milinkovic-Savic is also said to be in talks with Lazio over a new deal.

According to The Sun's Ken Lawrence, United manager Jose Mourinho is hoping for a transfer budget of up to £250 million this summer as he continues to restructure the team, with "at least" two new midfielders to be targeted.

With United scouting Milinkovic-Savic, he is evidently among the targets being considered.

The 22-year-old is enjoying a strong season with the Italian outfit and has racked up seven goals and as many assists in all competitions. Here's a look at his Serie A numbers this season, courtesy of Squawka:

While there's clearly room for improvement with his pass completion, the Serbian is a dynamic, technically adept and hardworking performer in the centre of the park.

GianlucaDiMarzio.com's David Amoyal has likened him to one of United's current midfield stars:

While he is yet to hit the same heights as Paul Pogba—who, in turn, has yet to reach them with the Red Devils—the comparison is understandable given his strengths. Like the Frenchman, Milinkovic-Savic is also tall and powerfully built.

Whether United need another player in a similar mould to Pogba is up for debate. A more pressing need should be to find a holding midfielder, perhaps one who can replicate Michael Carrick's composure in possession or operate as a ball-winning enforcer in front of the back four.

Carrick will be 36 in July, and with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin gone, it's clearly an area in need of reinforcement this summer. Mourinho evidently recognised that.

Milinkovic-Savic may not necessarily fill a notable gap in the squad, but he has great potential and could be a valuable addition, particularly with more European football to come next year.
