One day before the start of the 2017 Major League Baseball season, the Toronto Blue Jays have officially announced their contract extension with manager John Gibbons.

Gibbons' previous contract had a unique rollover clause, which TSN.ca reported "would preclude him from reaching 'lame-duck' status. In that previous contract, a proviso existed whereby every Jan. 1, the contract became guaranteed for the following year with another option tacked on to it."
A contract extension has been expected for some time, with Gibbons expressing his gratitude toward the organization for his new deal March 22, per Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star:
"I wasn't obsessed with it. This organization has been great to me, and you never know how long these things last [manager positions]. Coming into it, with a new regime and all, I never knew what to expect at first. I'm glad to be with it still; Toronto has been my whole major league manager career … you sometimes think a guy from Texas, it doesn't happen a lot that way. It's been great, and I'm very excited ...
"
Gibbons is in his second stint as Toronto's manager. He previously led the Blue Jays from 2004-08 and was rehired after the 2012 season.
In his second go-around leading the Blue Jays, Gibbons has a 339-309 record and has led the team to the American League Championship Series each of the last two seasons.
