Rhode Island
The Rams may have played themselves into the NCAA tournament field after defeating Davidson, 84-60 to make the Atlantic-10 finals against VCU on Sunday.
Regardless of whether URI loses in the Battle of the Battering Rams, it should be in the NCAA tournament at this point. The Rams are 23-9 overall and have won their last seven games, including a victory over A-10 regular-season champion VCU.
Rhode Island also is ranked 40th in rating percentage index (RPI), per NCAA.com, which puts it in the same neighborhood as Michigan (No. 38), Wake Forest (No. 39), Oklahoma State (No. 41) and Miami (No. 42), all of whom are projected to make the NCAA tournament, per Joe Lunardi of ESPN.
Right now, Lunardi, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report and Jerry Palm of CBS Sports have the Rams as one of the last teams in the field. That should still be the case on Sunday afternoon even if URI loses to VCU.
Prediction: In
Illinois State
The Redbirds may provide the toughest call for the committee.
On one hand, they finished the season with a 27-6 win-loss record and a 17-1 mark in Missouri Valley Conference play. The Redbirds are also ranked No. 32 in RPI.
On the other hand, Illinois State only had two wins against teams ranked in the top 100 of the RPI (No. 31 Wichita State and No. 87 New Mexico) and a strength-of-schedule ranking 159th, per ESPN.
Lunardi, Miller and Palm all have ISU as one of the first teams out of the field, and the guess is it stays that way on Sunday.
Prediction: Out
Kansas State
The Wildcats added a big win to their resume by defeating Baylor, ranked ninth in the latest Associated Press poll, in the quarterfinal round. Kansas State may have lost to West Virginia in the semifinals, but it passed the eye test by giving the No. 11 Mountaineers a great fight, losing just 51-50.
Kansas State has a weaker RPI (58th) and finished in the bottom half of the Big 12, but it has beaten Baylor twice and West Virginia once this season. The Big 12 is also considered the strongest conference in men's college basketball this year, per the Sagarin ratings, so K-State's tough in-conference schedule will certainly be a plus on its resume.
Lunardi, Miller and Palm all have KSU in the field right now. Expect the Wildcats to make the NCAA tournament but play in a First Four game on Tuesday or Wednesday.
