Derrick Williams, Cavaliers Agree to New 10-Day Contract
The Cleveland Cavaliers announced Wednesday that they have signed forward Derrick Williams to a second 10-day contract.
Cleveland.com's Joe Vardon first reported the defending champions intended to ink Williams to another 10-day pact. The deal will reportedly pay out $67,700.
Once it expires, the Cavaliers will have to decide whether they want to sign Williams for the remainder of the 2016-17 season.
But based on the way he's performed to this point, Cleveland would be wise to keep him in the fold.
In four games with the Wine and Gold to date, Williams is averaging 9.8 points, three rebounds and 0.3 steals on 60 percent shooting from the field, including 37.5 percent shooting from three.
And while the sample size is minuscule, the Cavaliers have been efficient during Williams' 91 minutes on the floor.
According to NBA.com's statistical database, the Cavaliers have outscored opponents by 20.6 points per 100 possessions with Williams on the court. When he sits, they've been outscored by 3.1 points per 100 possessions.
"We're happy to have him," LeBron James said following the Cavaliers' win against the Denver Nuggets on Feb. 11, per ESPN.com's Dave McMenamin. "It's not many places you're going to find a [6'8"] wing with athleticism like that at 25. So we're lucky to have him."
The praise didn't stop there.
"He fits perfectly," James said after the team's win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Feb. 14, per Cleveland.com's Chris Fedor. "Energy and effort. Those West Coast guys love to run the floor, and my little league coaches used to tell me I look like a West Coast guy because I like to run the floor as well, so we fit in perfect."
With the ability to guard multiple wing positions and provide supplementary scoring in spurts, Williams has the makings of a rotational glue contributor for the Cavaliers should they commit to him long-term.
