WWE Roadblock 2016 Results: Twitter Reacts to Top Stars, Moments and More
The final pay-per-view of 2016 hit the WWE Network airwaves Sunday night as Raw presented Roadblock: End of the Line, a show that featured several high-profile championship bouts and several other grudge matches.
The heavily scrutinized Roman Reigns squared off with the internet darling Universal champion Kevin Owens in the night's main event, ensuring that Twitter would be buzzing about Sunday's broadcast.
How would fans on the popular social media platform react to that match and the other high-profile bouts on the card?
Take a look for yourself with this unique recap of the finale of WWE's 2016 pay-per-view schedule.
New Tag Team Champions
The final pay-per-view of the year also proved to be the last in The New Day's reign as WWE world tag team champions as the popular trio dropped the titles to Sheamus and Cesaro.
The finish, which saw Cesaro fake a tag to Sheamus and sacrifice him in time for The Celtic Warrior to catch Kofi Kingston off-guard with a small package, drew a tweet of disbelief from historian Kris Zellner:
WhatCulture Pro Wrestling's Adam Pacitti and Bleacher Report's Mike Chiari looked to the future, while The Fan's Podcast reacted to the shocking upset accordingly:
B/R's Ryan Dilbert applauded the bout for injecting the broadcast with energy from the get-go:
The contest was a brilliant bit of storytelling that focused on New Day's penchant for cheating and using Xavier Woods as a distraction and how, when that no longer worked, they found themselves unfocused and beaten.
The new champions help freshen things up a bit, but one cannot help but think there is at least one more big title clash between the two tandems somewhere in the near future.
Sami Doesn't Quit
To be considered anything even remotely close to a winner, Sami Zayn would have to survive 10 minutes alone with Braun Strowman. While he ultimately would, it looked as though Raw general manager Mick Foley would throw in a white towel signifying the overpowered babyface's surrender.
With every bump he took, the sarcastic tweeters brought the funny, even dipping into the Rocky series for inspiration:
More strong storytelling from the Superstars of Raw, marking the second straight match that featured cerebral spots and moments rather than intense action that put the health of the performers at risk.
Neville Returns, Sends a Message to the Cruiserweight Division
After what felt like an eternity away, Neville returned Sunday night and underwent a sudden and unforgiving character transformation. Gone was the humble Brit, former NXT champion, and in his place was a ruthless and vengeful villain who laid out The Brian Kendrick, T.J. Perkins and cruiserweight champion Rich Swann:
Twitter reacted favorably to the development, praising the booking decision:
"I like where @WWENeville's mind is at. #Roadblock #205Live
— Ariya Daivari (@AriyaDaivari411) December 19, 2016"
Neville's return and heel turn instantly adds a spark to the cruiserweight division in desperate need of it. No longer forced to rely on Kendrick to carry the title program from the heel perspective, the division will benefit from an established star whose style reflects the attitude of the division.
WWE's Iron Women
Drama enveloped the Iron Man match for the Raw Women's Championship on Sunday night, leaving many on Twitter biting their nails as they watched Sasha Banks and Charlotte wage war over the top prize in women's wrestling.
With just seconds left, Banks tapped out to the Figure Eight, necessitating sudden-death overtime. Zellner, The Fan's Podcast and Cageside Seats all responded sarcastically to the booking decision:
B/R's Chris Mueller wondered why the match was not the headliner:
Scott Fishman, Voices of Wrestling and WWE Creative Humor all pointed out the blood that had begun pouring from The Boss' nose/mouth area:
After Charlotte scored the sudden-death win, keeping her singles match undefeated streak on pay-per-view intact, other accounts were quick to praise the bout:
"the fight both these women bring to every single match has been incredible to see. congrats @MsCharlotteWWE #wweroadblock
— Cathy Kelley (@catherinekelley) December 19, 2016"
Banks and Charlotte have taken the WWE Universe on a roller-coaster ride over the last year, but it is time for both to step away from each other, for WWE Creative to come up with something fresh and interesting for them to do.
While the in-ring product has been fantastic, allowing the program to become stale would be a detriment to everything the company has spent so much time building.
A Mediocre Main Event
What happens when a pay-per-view features a main event that is solid enough but unspectacular and more closely resembles a television headliner than something fans should be expected to pay for?
Twitter responds accordingly.
B/R's Eric Ball, Alfred "Big Nasty" Konuwa and Kevin Berge lambasted the lack of urgency and importance of the main event, while Pro Wrestling Sheet's Ryan Satin questioned the logic behind the show-closing beatdown by Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins:
Lords of Pain's Chad Matthews continued the criticism:
B/R's Chiari opted to take a more positive spin on the events that unfolded late in Sunday's show, using what went down to hint at Royal Rumble implications:
One of the biggest issues with the Raw brand pay-per-views to this point has been the lack of excitement surrounding them. Nothing feels all that out of the ordinary from what fans have come to expect every Monday night, rendering the idea of an extravaganza worthless.
Reigns and Owens had a fine match, but overbooking and another generic beatdown by babyfaces left this feeling more like a Monday night and less like the show-closing spectacular it was billed as.
