Richard Sherman Comments on Seahawks Throwing from 1-Yard Line vs. Rams

Mike ChiariDec 16, 2016

The Seattle Seahawks topped the Los Angeles Rams 24-3 on Thursday night to clinch the NFC West, but cornerback Richard Sherman wasn't all smiles before or during the game.

A Russell Wilson pass intended for tight end Jimmy Graham on 1st-and-goal from the 1-yard line with Seattle up by seven points was nearly intercepted. Wilson found wide receiver Doug Baldwin for a one-yard score two plays later.

Sherman could be seen getting heated with head coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell on the sideline, and he explained why following the game: "I'm upset about us throwing from the 1. I'd rather do what most teams would do, making a conscientious decision to run the ball. ... Yeah, I was letting [Carroll] know. We've already seen how that goes. I'm sure you guys have seen that play enough times."

Carroll spoke on 710 ESPN Seattle's Brock and Salk show about a meeting he had with Sherman, per Sheil Kapadia of ESPN:

"

"I just spent an hour with him, and we've been through it. I love Richard. I just flat-out love the dude, and I've been with him through so much and watched him grow and do so many unbelievable things. We made it through it. He knows that wasn't right. He's just so fiery, and we've seen him before. He'll speak for himself on that. But I feel very good about where he is right now. We're going to be all right.

"It was too bad. It was a distraction to the game. And that's not the way it's supposed to go."

"

The play? The Seahawks' final offensive play of Super Bowl XLIX, which saw New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler intercept Wilson in the end zone.

Carroll, Bevell and the Seahawks were roundly scrutinized for the decision, as they didn't hand the ball off to Marshawn Lynch. The Pats won 28-24.

Sherman entered the game on edge due to his open disdain for Thursday Night Football:

The dynamic could have changed if the Rams had hauled in the interception; however, Thomas Rawls, unlike Lynch from the Super Bowl, wasn't having a great game.

L.A. shut down Seattle's rushing attack to the tune of a 2.4 yards-per-carry average, and Rawls ran the ball 21 times for just 34 yards.

The Seahawks no longer have the benefit of Beast Mode in the backfield, and the coaching staff has more trust in one of the league's best quarterbacks near the end zone.
