Recap
A steady but quiet start for Dodt—he carded par on the first eight holes—saw Varner pull level after picking up shots at the third and seventh.
The Australian would go on to card birdies of his own at the ninth—where he missed a short putt for an eagle—10th and 14th in a composed and unblemished round, but Varner's bold play paid off.
His birdie at the seventh sparked an incredible championship-winning run, as illustrated by the European Tour's official Twitter feed:
The American remained undeterred by bogeys at the 11th and 14th and maintained his momentum as he continued to pick up shots.
Indeed, the pair were level after 14 holes with Dodt having just carded an impressive birdie, holing out from 40 feet while Varner picked up a bogey, but the latter was able to pull away with further birdies at the 15th—which completed his nine-hole run without a par—and another at the 17th.
The European Tour celebrated his landmark win:
The 26-year-old was delighted with the victory after losing in a play-off here last year to Nathan Holman, per the European Tour:
"That was pretty awesome, I had a lot of fun out there today
I’ve thought a lot about losing the play-off here last year, it was the closest I came to winning last season so it’s been playing on my mind a little bit.
I’m now a much better, more mature player than I was 12 months ago and this win is big for me. Winning is hard, I don’t care where you tee it up, so to get it done feels great.
"
Meanwhile, ESPN's Jason Sobel believes Varner will be able to build on his win:
Indeed, to come back from the disappointment of last year's tournament and hold his nerve to pick up his first professional win bodes well for him.
The American has set himself up for a successful 2017 season, and it will be intriguing to see where he's able to go from here.
