Chris Weinke Comments on Rams Offense for Jared Goff's Start vs. Dolphins

Tim DanielsNov 18, 2016

Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke stated the team isn't going to alter its approach as first overall pick Jared Goff prepares to make his first NFL start Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.Ā

Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com passed along comments Friday from Weinke, a Heisman Trophy winner who spent seven years in the NFL, about the Rams' confidence in the rookie's ability to step in without needing to take anything off his plate:

"

We're not scaling back. This kid understands what we're trying to do on offense, he's able to execute it. He had a good day of practice [on Wednesday], we expect him to have another good day on Friday. In terms of our approach as a staff, putting a game plan together, we're obviously smart enough to say, 'Hey, listen, we know what this kid does well, and we're going to lean on those things.' But we're not going to scale back for him. We don't need to.

"It's the same amount of plays, the same package," Rams offensive coordinator Rob Boras said, per Gonzalez. "We trust with where he is mentally."

Many Rams fans have been pleading for Goff's debut as the team's record has faded to 4-5 after a promising 3-1 start. Struggles under veteran quarterback Case Keenum, who sports a lackluster 76.8 passer rating through nine games, were the main reasons for a recent four-game losing streak.

Weinke told ESPN.com the franchise has put the hyped Cal product "in a position to be successful." He also wants people to understand the path to success often includes a lot of twists and turns, though.

"I think he's prepared, he's ready to go, and I think we all see it as a staff," Weinke said. "Like any other rookie quarterback, we have to accept that there's going to be some bumps in the road."

Count Hall of Fame running back and former Rams star Eric Dickerson among those taking a wait-and-see approach to the situation.

In September, he provided a brutally honest assessment of Goff's preseason play to Eric Edholm of Yahoo Sports. He stated the quarterback "didn't look prepared" en route to completing just 44.9 percent of his throws with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

"I gave [Goff] a flat-out D," Dickerson said. "He just didn't perform well in the preseason. I am just being honest. You might not like it. I don't care if it comes from me. I just think it's true."

His outspoken criticism shifted to Weinke this week. Gonzalez relayed the six-time Pro Bowler's questioning of the Florida State standout's track record of helping young QBs on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

"Show me the proof," Dickerson said. "Show me your history. What history do you have working with quarterbacks, developing quarterbacks? Then I can believe. And I just believe that they don't have the right coaches in place for him, and that's what it comes down to."

The pressure on Goff is only amplified by the fact other rookie quarterbacks have already started and are enjoying success this season, led by the Dallas Cowboys' Dak Prescott and the Philadelphia Eagles' Carson Wentz.

In addition, facing the Dolphins in his first start is a challenge. Miami ranks ninth in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game (235.6) and 10th in opponent passer rating (86.3).
