Jon Dorenbos, Eagles Agree to New Contract: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

The Philadelphia Eagles and long snapper Jon Dorenbos have reached an agreement on a three-year contract extension.

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson announced the new deal Friday, per the team's official Twitter account.

Dorenbos has established himself as one of the league's most reliable specialists since signing with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2003. He's appeared in 197 games across 14 years with the Bills, Eagles and Tennessee Titans. He earned Pro Bowl selections in 2009 and 2014.

The 36-year-old Texas native rose to national fame over the summer after appearing on Season 11 of NBC's America's Got Talent. He showed off his skills as a magician, advancing to the finale before finishing in third place.

Julie Bacanskas and Alex Smith of the Eagles' official website passed along Dorenbos' comments about the support he received from his teammates and the Philadelphia community:

"

I've played for this team for a long time and I want to win more than anything. It's really cool that the team had my back and the players, the fans. I can't thank you enough. It's so, so cool. Nothing gives me more pride than to represent Philly as an Eagle on the stage in Dolby Theatre.

"

He explained to Evan Grossman of the New York Daily News the interest in magic originally came as a mental escape after his father killed his mother during an argument when he was 12: "I didn't realize it then, but looking back as an adult, it was the only time I didn't worry about everything else in my life. I didn't think about my parents, I didn't think about where I was going to live. I didn't think about all the crap."

He's recovered from those tragic days to establish himself in two separate crafts, football and magic. It's unique that it took the latter skill for a football player to garner nationwide attention, but long snappers operate in relative anonymity unless something goes wrong.

Dorenbos is as steady as they come in the niche role, and the extension shows the Eagles believe that will remain the case for the foreseeable future. Philadelphia returns to action Sunday afternoon with a high-profile clash against the Seattle Seahawks.
