Taylor Lewan Fined for Making Contact with an Official: Details and Reaction
Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Taylor Lewan has been fined $30,000 for making contact with an official during his team's Week 10 game against the Green Bay Packers, Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com reported Thursday.
The third-year player was ejected for the incident, which started with Lewan shoving Packers defensive tackle Letroy Guion. When the official moved in the way to break it up, Lewan pushed him instead.
Quarterback Marcus Mariota was happy his tackle came to his defense after a potential late hit, per Jim Wyatt of the team's official website. On the other hand, head coach Mike Mularkey thought it was the right call and said Lewan "should not have been where he was," per Wyatt.
The 25-year-old said he will appeal the fine, per Kuharsky:
"Every fine you get, whether you're right or wrong, you appeal. It's pretty simple: I didn't know who had their hands on me. Obviously if you watch all of it, I'm looking at the [Packers] the whole time. I never once see the [official].
You feel hands on you in that type of confrontation, you don't know if it's your teammate or the other team, so it's an honest mistake.
"
Lewan has proved to be a useful contributor on the field over the past couple of seasons, but his extracurricular activity has been a problem. This was his third personal foul in 2016, per Pro-Football-Reference.com. He was also involved in a postgame argument with an official in September.
He picked up his first fine from the league for an unnecessary-roughness penalty during the preseason of his rookie year.
The 2014 first-round pick has started all 10 games for the Titans this season, although Dennis Kelly filled in at left tackle for the majority of the team's 47-25 win over the Packers after Lewan was ejected Sunday.
