Gregg Popovich Comments on Donald Trump's Win over Hillary Clinton
San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich addressed reporters prior to Friday night's game against the Detroit Pistons, and he expressed frustration with Donald Trump's victory over Hillary Clinton in Tuesday's general election.
During an extensive discussion regarding his feelings about the president-elect's triumph, Popovich opined that regardless of political orientation, the nation's decision to elect a candidate who embraced such divisive dialogue was discouraging to him.
"Not basically because the Republicans won or anything, but the disgusting tenure and tone and all the comments that have been xenophobic, homophobic, racist, misogynistic," he said, per Pounding The Rock's Chris Itz. "And I live in that country where half the people ignored all of that to elect someone. That's the scariest part for me."

Popovich added that he was disappointed the country elected Trump after he openly mocked a disabled reporter and tried to discredit President Barack Obama on the campaign trail:
"I mean, come on, that's what a seventh/eighth-grade bully does. And he was elected President of the United States. We would have scolded our kids, we would have had discussions and talked until we were blue in the face trying to get them to understand these things. And he is in charge of this country. That's disgusting.
"
The five-time champion also said the tenor of Trump's rhetoric against minorities has made him wonder how citizens could turn out to vote for him:
"I'm a rich white guy and I'm sick to my stomach thinking about it. I can't imagine being a Muslim right now, or a woman, or an African-American, a Hispanic or a handicapped person — how disenfranchised they might feel. And for anyone in those groups who voted for him it's just beyond my comprehension how they ignore all of that. And so my final conclusion is, my big fear is, we are Rome.
"
Popovich, 67, has been tabbed to succeed Mike Krzyzewski as the head coach of Team USA basketball starting with the squad's 2017 training camp. He will then coach the Stars and Stripes at the 2019 World Cup and 2020 Summer Olympics.
