Bill O'Brien Comments on Brock Osweiler's Performance vs. Broncos
Despite not living up to expectations in the first half of the season, the Houston Texans are sticking with Brock Osweiler.
According to Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com, head coach Bill O'Brien hasn't even considered making a change at quarterback.
"He's a good player," O'Brien said Tuesday. "I think it's very difficult to come into a new system and a new team and just pick it up right away. I think everybody has to do a better job."
The Texans were hoping to shore up the quarterback position this offseason when they signed Osweiler to a $72 million deal over four years. The former Denver Broncos player was supposed to provide steadiness on a team that used four different starting quarterbacks last season.
Unfortunately, the 25-year-old has struggled with a 71.9 quarterback rating, which ranks 30th out of 32 qualified players, per ESPN.com. He has completed only 58.2 percent of his passes and has eight touchdowns to go with eight interceptions in seven starts.
The low point was the 27-9 loss to the Broncos in Week 7, where he finished with only 131 passing yards on 41 attempts. This was the third time this season he failed to reach 200 yards on more than 40 attempts, becoming the first person ever to accomplish this feat, per the Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN Stats & Info).
Rich Eisen of NFL Network provided much harsher criticism on the team to this point:
Despite the problems, the Texans are sticking with their starter while hoping better days are ahead.
"I think he can play better," O'Brien said. "I know that the receivers can run routes better. We continue to work and we continue to go down the same inconsistent road, but eventually we have to find consistency or we're not going to be where we want to be."
Brandon Weeden and Tom Savage are the other quarterbacks on the Texans roster.
