Gary Kubiak Will Not Coach Broncos vs. Chargers After Hospitalization

Rob GoldbergOct 10, 2016

After spending Sunday night in the hospital, Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak will not be on the sideline for Thursday's game against the San Diego Chargers.

Team vice president John Elway told Cecil Lammey of 104.3 The Fan that Kubiak will get the week off and return next Monday.

The 55-year-old coach went to the hospital following Sunday's 23-16 loss to the Atlanta Falcons with flu-like symptoms. He was eventually diagnosed with a "complex migraine condition that caused extreme fatigue and body weakness," according to the team's official website.

James Palmer of NFL Network provided additional information surrounding the coach's condition:

Kubiak released a statement regarding his health, as shared by Broncos vice president of public relations Patrick Smyth:

"

I’m feeling much better and am thankful for everyone’s thoughts and well wishes. It’s tough not being there with our team this week, but I’ve got great confidence in Joe D, our coordinators and coaching staff, and all of our players. Greek and the medical team did an outstanding job taking care of me and getting this figured out. I’ve made a lot of positive changes health-wise in recent years and will continue to listen to doctors. I’ll be at home this week, resting and getting healthy, and I look forward to rejoining our team on Monday.

"

Special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis will take over head coaching duties for Week 6, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

DeCamillis has no head coaching experience but has been in the NFL for 29 seasons with six different franchises. Before coming to the Broncos in 2015, he was the assistant head coach for the Chicago Bears from 2013-14.

He explained his confidence in the upcoming role Monday, via Lammey:

However, Michael Silver of NFL.com was confused by the decision to tab DeCamillis:

The 4-1 Broncos will take on the 1-4 Chargers in the first game of Week 6 on Thursday.

As for Kubiak, the team will make sure his health comes first, per Palmer:

Kubiak also collapsed on the field in 2013 as head coach of the Houston Texans.
