Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Rumours, Stars Linked with Red Devils

Manchester United have reportedly been scouting Everton duo striker Romelu Lukaku and right-back Seamus Coleman, with manager Jose Mourinho said to be keen on signing both players.

A report from Paul Hetherington of the Daily Star's Sunday edition has stated United scouts were at Everton's recent 1-1 home draw with Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Hetherington pointed out how Lukaku's development on Merseyside has caught Mourinho's eye, after the Portuguese coach originally sold the Belgian attacker while at Chelsea.

The report also noted how United might have the edge if the club chooses to push for a deal for the 23-year-old striker: "Significantly, Lukaku’s agent is Mino Raiola, the man behind United’s summer signings—Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan."

Lukaku has indeed produced the goods since Mourinho jettisoned him from Stamford Bridge in 2014. He's in prolific form this season, scoring five Premier League goals already, per WhoScored.com.

The Belgian has matured into a true talisman up front, and United may need one of those sooner than they think. The Red Devils have become increasingly reliant on 35-year-old target man Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Mourinho's watch.

It hasn't helped that both Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial have been struggling mightily. The latter may not be suited to the demands of Mourinho's defensively disciplined style of play, according to Tony Cascarino writing in the Times (h/t Charles Perrin of the Daily Express).

As for Rooney, he's coming under increasing fire for subpar performances at both club and international level. The 30-year-old was even booed during England's recent win over Malta of Sky Sports, prompting support from United team-mate Jesse Lingard, according to Stephen Mills.

At least teenage forward Marcus Rashford continues to impress. However, the 18-year-old and Ibrahimovic alone won't be enough to guarantee consistent success for Mourinho's United.

If he really has warmed to Lukaku, the Old Trafford chief won't find a better centre-forward to lead the line for his evolving squad.

Similarly, there are few better options at right-back than Coleman. It's also a position United need to strengthen, with veteran winger Antonio Valencia still doing his best as a makeshift defender.

Unfortunately, Mourinho doesn't seem keen on the other options in the squad. Specifically, versatile Italy international Matteo Darmian is already inching toward the exit, with Serie A outfit Inter Milan reportedly close to sealing a January deal, according to Italian sources Tuttosport and La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t TalkSport).

Landing Coleman would be a coup for Mourinho, giving him the type of physical, raiding right-back he's usually featured at previous stops.

Of course, Everton are sure to resist any attempts from United to snag their prized assets. The presence of billionaire shareholder Farhad Moshiri means the Toffees could play hardball, even though both players may still find the lure of Old Trafford difficult to resist.
