Odell Beckham Jr. Comments on Recent Behavior During Games
New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has been making headlines during the 2016 season for his antics after plays rather than the plays he's making.
On Thursday, he spoke with the media, per NFL.com's Mike Garafolo, about his behavior that's drawn the attention of reporters, fans and opposing players alike: "What I'm doing is not what I'd want a six-year-old boy doing."
The third-year receiver began raising eyebrows during the Giants' Week 3 loss against the Washington Redskins and his arch-nemesis, Josh Norman, for a tantrum thrown on the sideline:
It grabbed the attention of Giants head coach Ben McAdoo, who said his receiver needed to "become less of a distraction," per ESPN.com's Jordan Raanan.
But in a Week 4 Monday night game against the Minnesota Vikings, Beckham was flagged for taunting after protesting to line judge Tom Symonette that he was hit late out of bounds by cornerback Xavier Rhodes.
He wasn't happy about it after the game and sounded off to the media, per Chuck Schilken of the Chicago Tribune: "There's never an explanation [from the officials]. It's always, it's just my fault. That's all I look at it as: It's my fault. I just have to understand if I sneeze the wrong way, it'll be a flag, it'll be a fine. If I tie my shoe the wrong way, it might be a fine or a flag."
On Tuesday, he told ESPN's Anita Marks he wasn't "having fun anymore."
As the Giants' No. 1 receiver, Beckham will continue to draw the ire of defensive backs around the league looking to get a rise out of him, and he has realized that, per SNY's Ralph Vacchiano:
But according to two Giants coaches who spoke with SB Nation's Thomas George on Wednesday, Beckham will be on a short leash come Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers. If he has another incident, either on or off the field, the 23-year-old could be benched or even suspended, depending on how bad it is, according to George.
That was news to him, per Art Stapleton of the Record:
Attitude aside, Beckham is still the Giants' most valuable receiver, leading the team with 22 receptions for 303 yards. But if he continues to take his team's focus away from the gridiron, the only thing Beckham will be seeing inside an NFL stadium is the bench.
