Odell Beckham Jr. Not in Danger of Being Benched, According to Ben McAdoo

Tyler ConwayOct 6, 2016

If Odell Beckham Jr. has another on-field outburst in Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers, it was reported it may not be the NFL's ire he'd have to worry about but his own team's.

Two New York Giants coaches anonymously told Thomas George of SB Nation on Oct. 6 that the team is prepared to bench Beckham over his antics. A suspension could follow for conduct detrimental to New York for one or two games.

However, Beckham told reportersĀ after that article surfaced that he had not been told by anyone in the organization he was facing a benching or suspension if he had a future incident.

Head coach Ben McAdoo also refuted the report, saying in a radio interview on WFAN 660 (Paul Schwartz of the New York Post): "It's news to me." Ā

"TheĀ GiantsĀ have never considered and are not considering any sort of internal discipline for [Beckham's]Ā emotional outbursts and have continued to support him publiclyĀ and privately, according to multiple team sources," CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora reported on Sunday.

The original story came amid a week filled with Giants teammates and media members calling out Beckham, whose displays of public displeasure are rapidly becoming a distraction.

The former LSU star has become a focus ever since his battle with Josh Norman last December that resulted in a one-game suspension. He was seen punching a kicking net in Week 3's game against WashingtonĀ and was penalized 15 yards in the recent loss to the Minnesota Vikings after bumping an official.

"There's never an explanation [from the officials]," Beckham told reporters. "It's always it's just my fault. That's all I look at it as: It's my fault. I just have to understand if I sneeze the wrong way, it'll be a flag, it'll be a fine. If I tie my shoe the wrong way, it might be a fine or a flag."

Beckham later expanded on his thoughts, telling ESPN's Anita MarksĀ the constant spotlight has grown tiresome.

"Football is my sanctuary," Beckham said. "It's where I go to escape. It's where I'm most happy. I'm not having fun anymore."

Giants coaches and teammates have been less publicly forgiving. Quarterback Eli Manning, himself worthy of some criticism amid a slow start, told reporters after Monday's loss that Beckham "kind of brought that upon himself."

He later called on Beckham to be "professional" in a Tuesday interview with WFAN's Mike Francesa (via James Kratch of NJ.com):

"

If someone hits him late or someone says something, hey, get up and go about your business. That's part of playing the game and being a professional. I think he knows that, and he's got to calm down and just settle in, think about going out there and doing your job. It was a frustrating game. I understand he wants the ball more, and I know he wants to make plays. These things happen. Some days you get a bunch of catches, some days you don't. It's about going back to work and trying to be better the next week.

"

Other teammates, such as running back Bobby Rainey, have been more forgiving, per George.

"

We've stopped ourselves a lot, some things we haven't done right, but we can fix that and be fine. I encourage Odell to just be patient. The world is full of impatient people. I used to be one of them. That is something I had to work hard to fix about myself. Understanding patience and working hard goes a long way.

"

Beckham is off to the worst start of his career, going without a touchdown in the first four games of this season. He's coming off a career-worst three-catch, 23-yard performance against Minnesota.

Odds are, if he were performing like the superstar his first two seasons made him, the Giants would be much less inclined to make a move.
