Weatherspoon Suffers Second Achilles Injury
Tuesday, Oct. 4
According to Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com, the 28-year-old veteran ruptured his right Achilles in Week 4 against the Carolina Panthers.
This is the second time Weatherspoon has suffered a ruptured Achilles, also missing the 2014 season with the same ailment on the other leg. Despite the setback, the linebacker remains in good spirits.
"My headspace is awesome man," Weatherspoon told ESPN. "I'm blessed. I showed that I can play at a high level again. I'll do it again, with God's unchanging hand."
Weatherspoon had 27 tackles on the season, including four on Sunday before going down with the injury.
The 2010 first-round pick spent his first five seasons in Atlanta, starting 41 of the 47 games he played, including all 36 after his rookie year. Unfortunately, injuries forced him to miss 28 games from 2012-14.
He signed with the Arizona Cardinals last season but struggled to see the field, starting zero games and totaling only 11 tackles.
Although his return to the Falcons in 2016 provided some stability to the linebacking corps, the team is once again left without much depth at middle linebacker.
With Paul Worrilow and De'Vondre Campbell also dealing with injuries, the pressure will be on rookie Deion Jones to step up in the middle of the field. O'Brien Schofield and LaRoy Reynolds will also earn playing time as the team tries to get healthy.
