Frank Gore Passes Jim Brown for 9th-Most Rushing Yards in NFL History
Frank Gore reached another milestone in his incredible career on Sunday, as the Indianapolis Colts running back surpassed Jim Brown and became the ninth-most prolific rusher in NFL history.
The Colts commemorated Gore's achievement during the game against the Chicago Bears, while Colts offensive tackle Jack Mewhort congratulated Gore after the game:
Gore, 33, has remained productive, rushing for 253 yards and two touchdowns entering Week 5. On an Indianapolis team that has had its struggles this season, Gore has remained a bright spot.
Gore was a third-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2005 draft and has been one of the steadiest running backs in the NFL since. He's rushed for 1,000 or more yards in a season eight times, 850 or more yards 10 times and has reached five Pro Bowls. He's also the leading rusher among active players.
He'll present an interesting case for Hall of Fame voters. Despite his many achievements, he's never led the NFL in rushing yards or rushing touchdowns in a season, has never finished in the top five in rushing touchdowns and finished top five in rushing yards just once (third in 2006).
He's also never been a first-team All-Pro selection by the Associated Press and was named to the second team just once, in 2006. And he's never claimed an offseason award like an NFL MVP or Offensive Player of the Year.
For all of Gore's steady production, the argument against him when the Hall of Fame voters analyze his resume will be that he was never considered one of the truly dominant running backs of his generation, unlike LaDainian Tomlinson or Adrian Peterson. The argument for him will be his consistency.
Regardless, surpassing a legend like Brown is a huge achievement. However Gore is honored after his career is over, it's clear the running back still has plenty to achieve while he remains in the league.
