Josh Norman Fined for Hit vs. Sterling Shepard: Latest Details and Reaction
Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman was fined $48,620 for an unnecessary roughness penalty incurred during the fourth quarter of the team's 29-27 win over the New York Giants in Week 3.
According to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano, the fine was for a high hit on Giants rookie wide receiver Sterling Shepard. James Kratch of NJ.com later confirmed the fine.
Much of the focus entering the game was on the matchup between Norman and Giants wideout Odell Beckham Jr. after their physical encounter last season led to several penalties.
Norman did cover OBJ for much of the game, and per ESPN Stats & Info, Beckham came out on the winning end of that battle:
An emotional Beckham was shown throwing tantrums on the sidelines, however, which led Skip Bayless of Fox Sports 1 to suggest that Norman had gotten inside his head:
While Norman got torched on a few occasions and could have put his team in a tough situation with the hit on Shepard, he made his presence known and had a huge impact on the game.
Norman also dropped an interception, though, and if not for the fact that Washington managed to come out on top, he may have been considered the goat in the aftermath.
His play on Shepard ended up being a footnote due to the result of the game, but the Redskins likely need Norman to clean things up and lock down top receivers more consistently moving forward to warrant the $75 million contract they gave him during the offseason.
