Gareth Southgate Appointed Interim England Manager: Latest Comments, Reaction
Gareth Southgate has been appointed interim England manager on Tuesday following Sam Allardyce's resignation.
The FA relayed the news that Southgate would replace Allardyce after his abrupt exit due to a Telegraph sting.
Most pressingly, Southgate, 46, has very little time to select his England squad for two upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Set to be Allardyce's second and third games in charge as England boss—following his opening 1-0 victory over Slovakia—the Three Lions face Malta at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 8 and Slovenia in Ljubljana three days later.
Formerly manager of Middlesbrough, Southgate has been in charge of England's under-21 side since 2013 and led them to the finals of the U21 European Championships in 2015.
He also oversaw England's triumph at May's 2016 Toulon Tournament, where his side beat hosts France in the final and won all five of their matches.
Per the Times' Henry Winter, Southgate and Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe have been the FA's long-term candidates to take the England job for some time:
However, the current circumstances under which Southgate will take charge are hardly ideal, and he faces a big test in seeing England through their two qualifiers.
In all likelihood Southgate will return to his previous job as soon as a permanent successor for Allardyce can be found.
