Chip Kelly Speaks on Why Colin Kaepernick Is No. 2 QB Behind Blaine Gabbert
Even after a blowout loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the San Francisco 49ers don't appear ready to make a quarterback change.
When asked about possibly replacing starter Blaine Gabbert, head coach Chip Kelly explained, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com: "Colin Kaepernick is our No. 2 QB. I don't think he's 100 percent right now so that's why he's our No. 2."
This comes after a scathing review of Gabbert from Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett.
"I think Kaepernick gives the team a better chance of winning," Bennett said after the game, per Jayson Jenks of the Seattle Times. "But that’s just my opinion."
On defending Gabbert, he added: "There is no challenge. He threw for 100 yards. The challenge is him reading the defense and staying in the pocket."
Gabbert finished Week 3 going 14-of-25 for 119 passing yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Until the last two drives of the game, San Francisco had more drives that ended with a three-and-out (five) than points (three).
For the season, the quarterback has 532 passing yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions and a 68.6 quarterback rating that ranks 30th in the NFL out of 32 qualified players, per ESPN.com.
On the other hand, Kaepernick has yet to throw a pass this season, only appearing at the end of the Week 1 win over the Los Angeles Rams.
The quarterback also disagrees with the coach's assertion that he is less than 100 percent, per Jennifer Lee Chan of NFLFemale.com:
Kaepernick lost his starting job to Gabbert midway through last season after posting a career-low 78.5 quarterback rating and a 2-6 record as a starter.
The sixth-year player has also made headlines for kneeling during the national anthem, making him the most disliked player in the NFL, according to a recent poll (via ESPN.com).
