Jurgen Klopp Talks Title Race, Mamadou Sakho, Anfield and More on Sky Sports
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp labelled the Premier League as the most competitive league in the world and said up to eight teams could have a chance of winning the title this season.Ā
Klopp's side thrashed Hull City 5-1 on Saturdayāthe Reds' third top-flight win on the bounceāand moved into fourth spot in the Premier League table after six matches.
Speaking on Sky Sports'Ā Monday Night Football, the former Borussia Dortmund boss said he is happy with Liverpool's current position in the table but insisted it is too early in the season to mean anything.
Klopp praised the competitiveness in the league and commented on how different the 2016-17 season already is to last term, when Leicester City surprisingly triumphed:
"It is very competitive, as always, but this year the biggest difference is maybe nobody was really happy last year apart from Leicester and with the positions, they all struck back and there was a big change in a lot of clubs in the summer with players, managers, all that stuff so there is a lot of quality in the Premier League. For sure, it is the most competitive league in world football.
Everybody asks which is the best league and I have no idea, but that seven or eight teams think they should be top of the table or top of the league, thatās quite interesting and we all have to cope with it. Itās good for everybody that watches it and we have to deal with the pressure.
"
Liverpool have been brilliant going forward so far this season, netting 16 goals, which is second only to table-topping Manchester City.
However, they have continued to look weak at the back, conceding nine goals, the joint-worst defensive record in the top 10.
Mamadou Sakho, arguably Liverpool's best defender in 2015-16, has not made an appearance this term, nominally because of injury, but he complained recently on social media that he has actually been fit for some time, via theĀ Liverpool Echo's James Pearce:
Klopp said he was in the wrong mood to deal with the situation as it happened on the day of Liverpool's clash with Hull, but he said the problem would be addressed, per Sky Sports MNF.
"It's not positive I would say," he said. "I will address the situation when I think it's the right moment. I haven't decided when that is yet. But it's not Christmas."
Due to expansion works at Anfield over the summer, Liverpool had to start the new Premier League season with three away gamesāthey beat Arsenal, lost to Burnley and then drew with Tottenham Hotspur on the road.
Eventually, they returned to Anfieldāwith the Main Stand expanded by 8,000 seatsāand have won their two league games at home this season convincingly.
Klopp's former club Dortmund have famously passionate fansāespecially in the Westfalenstadion's evocatively named Yellow Wallāand the Liverpool manager said Anfield could not be compared, per Sky Sports MNF:
"Oh [Anfield is] different. What I can say is that it is nothing compared to the yellow wall because 27,000 people are standing there which is quite impressive. Now we have a new stand in Liverpool which is 22,000 as sitting and I never saw something like this so it is quite impressive but the Kop created the best half an hour I had in football, I have to say.
"
It was the last half an hour against Dortmund. Iāve had a lot of nights where the atmosphere is brilliant and amazing, but this half an hour was the best I ever had.
Klopp also addressed his own playing career, saying he was average and would never have made it into any of the teams he has managed.
Liverpool fans will have no concerns about that now, though, as his current team look to be developing nicely and could be genuine title contenders this season.
