Luke Shaw Reportedly Wants to Play Through Injury to Regain Jose Mourinho Trust

Rory MarsdenSep 21, 2016

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is reportedly eager to be in contention for Saturday's Premier League clash with Leicester City despite suffering a groin tear, as he is keen to earn back manager Jose Mourinho's trust.

Per Ed Aarons in the Guardian, Shaw, 21, will not be available for United's EFL Cup clash with Northampton Town on Wednesday after he suffered his injury in Sunday's 3-1 defeat to Watford, after which he was singled out for criticism by Mourinho for poor positioning.

According to Mike McGrath in the Sun, though, the English defender is eager that his treatment not force him to be sidelined, and he wants to "play through the pain" and prove himself to Mourinho again.

A United source revealed that Shaw's injury will require constant treatment, but the former Southampton man is confident he will not need to spend any significant time out of action, per McGrath.

The Press Association's Simon Peach reported that, though Shaw's knock is not as serious as first thought, he is still a doubt for Saturday's vital clash with Leicester at Old Trafford:

United's defeat to the Hornets was their third on the bounce in all competitions, and Mourinho will be desperate to seal three points against the Foxes to get the Red Devils' season back on track.

While Mourinho openly criticised Shaw after the Watford loss, he remains, by some distance, United's best option at left-back.

The alternative would be to play Marcos Rojo in the starting lineup, whose performance in United's recent 1-0 UEFA Europa League defeat to Feyenoord drew strong criticism from many, including the Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst:

The prospect of having to play Rojo up against Leicester's Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy is not one Mourinho will relish given the Argentinian's recent form.

Mourinho's decision to pick out Shaw for public criticism after the defeat to Watford was questionable at best—especially as he was far from the sole United player deserving of it—per ESPN's Alex Shaw:

However, it seems that Shaw may have been galvanised by the Portuguese's words and is eager to prove that he is worthy of his place in the side.

The England international is a huge talent and could well be a key part of the United squad for the next decade or more.

After being dogged by injury last term, it would be foolish of him to return to action too soon and exacerbate his current problem.

But if Shaw feels he is ready to go up against Leicester, it can surely only be a good thing for Mourinho to have a left-back with a point to prove.
