Kessler's Return Spares Depleted Browns' QB Situation
Kessler, 23, took over as the starting quarterback heading into Week 3 after Robert Griffin III and Josh McCown both came down with injuries. That meant the third-round pick in the 2016 draft (93rd overall) was thrust into the starting role despite opening the year as the third-string quarterback.
Kessler, to his credit, was preparing as though he would eventually see the field. He told
"It's a violent game and injuries happen and things you can't prevent. That's why I've been doing what I've been doing. If I had to go in and that opportunity came up, I didn't want to be freaking out. That's something that I've always done, even back in high school or going to USC when I wasn't the starter there.
"
The Browns, on the other hand, probably weren't planning to use Kessler at quarterback this year. They almost certainly weren't expecting to see every player at the position get injured.
Now, the team won't have to resort to wide receiver Terrelle Pryor or a new addition to start at quarterback while McCown recovers.
