Marcus Rashford Will Start Feyenoord vs. Manchester United, Says Jose Mourinho

Rory MarsdenSep 11, 2016

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed he will start Marcus Rashford in the Red Devils' opening UEFA Europa League game of the season, at Feyenoord on Thursday.

The Englishman came on as a half-time substitute and excelled as United lost 2-1 to Manchester City on Saturday, and Mourinho said he has confidence Rashford, 18, has a bright future, per Chris Wheeler of MailOnline.

"For me, the next big game is against Feyenoord and the next game he is going to play," the United boss said. "I trust him completely. I know his future will be absolutely brilliant. Normally, people look to the football talent, but the personality at this level is very, very important and he was showing that immediately."

It was in the Europa League that Rashford first broke into the United first team last season, netting twice on his Red Devils debut, against FC Midtjylland, in February.

He has since gone from strength to strength, passing every test put in front of him, most recently netting a hat-trick on his debut for England's under-21 side, per Bleacher Report UK:

As a result, it was somewhat baffling to see Mourinho field Jesse Lingard on the left flank in the Manchester derby, in place of Anthony Martial, rather than Rashford.

Lingard proceeded to have a horror show of an opening half, and Mourinho replaced the 23-year-old with Rashford at half-time to immediate effect, per the Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst:

Though he could not propel United to victory against City, Rashford showed Mourinho that he deserves to be in his starting XI.

Per Luckhurst, Mourinho admitted after the clash at Old Trafford that he should have played Rashford in the opening 45 minutes:

The Portuguese is clearly now ready to rectify his mistake as United look to make a winning start to their Europa League campaign in Rotterdam's De Kuip.

The Red Devils are one of the favourites to win Europe's second-tier cup competition this season, and they have more than enough quality to go all the way.

For many, Rashford has already put forward a case to be undroppable, and a good performance against Feyenoord will further help his cause to start again in the Premier League against Watford on Sunday when the Red Devils will aim to get back to winning ways.
