KLM Open 2016: Friday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights
Bernd Wiesberger will carry a one-shot lead into the weekend at the European Tour's 2016 KLM Open after firing his second straight five-under 66 on Friday at The Dutch in Spijk, Netherlands.
The 30-year-old Austrian, who owns three career European Tour victories, has plenty of company near the top of the leaderboard, though. There are 25 other players within five strokes of the lead after two rounds, including six golfers within two shots.
Here's a look at how the top 10 shapes up after Friday's action:
| 1 | Bernd Wiesberger | -5 | -10 |
| T2 | Nino Bertasio | -4 | -9 |
| T2 | Joost Luiten | -7 | -9 |
| T2 | Mark Foster | -5 | -9 |
| T5 | Ben Evans | -2 | -8 |
| T5 | Tommy Fleetwood | -4 | -8 |
| T5 | Alejandro Canizares | -4 | -8 |
| T8 | Daniel Gavins | -6 | -7 |
| T8 | Simon Khan | -4 | -7 |
| T8 | Mikko Korhonen | -2 | -7 |
| T8 | Scott Hend | -3 | -7 |
| T8 | David Horsey | -3 | -7 |
Wiesberger's day got off to an inauspicious start, as he carded bogeys on two of the first three holes. The rest of his round was nearly flawless, though. He posted seven birdies and no bogeys over the remaining 15 holes to climb atop the leaderboard.
The leader, who's made just five cuts in 14 major appearances, is having a terrific week with his approach shots, giving himself a lot of looks at birdie. He's hit 28 of 36 greens through two rounds despite hitting less than half the fairways.
With the lead in hand, he posted comments on his official Facebook page after Round 2.
"What an awesome day we had out there today at The KLM Open," Wiesberger wrote. "Really happy with my round after a disappointing first few holes but played nicely for the rest of the round. Looking forward to the weekend at The Dutch!"
Joost Luiten finds himself among the group that is just one shot off the pace thanks to a seven-under 64, which tied for the day's best round with Paul Dunne. Luiten has now gone 36 holes without a bogey to open the tournament in his first event since the Olympics last month.
The Dutch veteran is looking to end a win drought that dates back to the 2014 ISPS Handa Wales Open. He does have a nice history in this event, however, winning the 2013 title with a playoff triumph over Miguel Angel Jimenez.
More putts like the one highlighted by the European Tour from the 16th hole would go a long way in adding another KLM Open victory to his resume:
Australian big-hitter Scott Hend is another player to watch heading into the weekend. He is three strokes behind Wiesberger, but he could be ready to make a charge.
He's driving the ball an average of more than 320 yards so far while still hitting 16 of 26 fairways and matching the leader's greens-in-regulation output (28-of-36).
While Hend's putting has run hot and cold, he offered up a couple of highlight-reel moments Friday to provide optimism he may get hot on the greens over the final two days, including one showcased by the European Tour:
The stage is set for another wild weekend. Two weeks ago, Thomas Pieters won the Made In Denmark event, which featured five players within a single shot of the lead heading to the final hole. A similar finish could be on tap Sunday.
Wiesberger hopes to avoid such drama, of course. He could start pulling away from the field if he can start hitting more fairways to give himself easier shots into the green following a couple of mediocre days off the tee.
