BMW Championship 2016: Thursday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights

Adam WellsSep 8, 2016

After rainy weather caused problems in Indiana on Thursday, Roberto Castro holds the lead at the 2016 BMW Championship at seven under par.

More than half of the field was unable to complete the first round because of darkness.

Per PGA Tour Media, play will resume Friday at 8 a.m. ET as golfers seek to get in as many holes as possible to get back on schedule for a Sunday finish.

Here are the standings at the BMW Championship following Thursday's action:

Castro flirted with a blemish-free round for most of the day, overcoming the bad weather to shoot eight under par through the first 17 holes. He was on fire on the back nine, hitting five birdies from Nos. 11 through 17.

The only negative came on the 18th hole, where he made a bogey that dropped his score to seven under.

Per Justin Ray of Golf Channel, Castro's success should have been easy to predict based on who designed the course at Crooked Stick Golf Club:

Castro can't get comfortable in his spot, with Brian Harman just one shot behind him at six under par. Jason Dufner, Dustin Johnson and Chris Kirk are tied for third at five under, while Fabian Gomez, Paul Casey, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama are right behind at four under.

Rory McIlroy, who managed to finish only 10 holes before darkness forced officials to suspend play, sits at three under. He picked up where he left off after winning the Deutsche Bank Championship on Sunday.

McIlroy wasted no time getting under par, hitting this birdie putt on the first hole, via the PGA Tour:

It was the first of four birdies on the front nine. McIlroy bogeyed the par-four eighth hole but was otherwise stellar Thursday.

Right behind McIlroy at two under is Jordan Spieth. The Texas native is in search of his first PGA Tour victory since May and just his third of the season.

McIlroy and Spieth are playing in the same group, along with Scott, so all three stars will have a lot of holes to finish Friday before they get started with the second round.

Phil Mickelson will also look to make a move with his extra time on the course Friday. He walked off the course at one under after 11 holes.

In typical Mickelson fashion, he also took time to give a young fan a thrill after his birdie on the third hole, via the PGA Tour:

Another vintage Mickelson moment occurred on the sixth hole, where he was left with a difficult shot to get onto the green that he salvaged with ease, via the PGA Tour:

Mickelson often seems to put himself in bad positions yet somehow finds a way out them. He's better off not tempting fate at this stage of his career, but it's hard for a leopard to change its spots.

Friday is going to be an interesting day at Crooked Stick Golf Club, with a lot of movement on the leaderboard sure to take place.

Players such as Castro, Harman and Johnson are at an advantage because they will have to play only 18 holes. Meanwhile, McIlroy, Spieth and Mickelson, among others, will have to show their stamina in order to put pressure on those at the top of the leaderboard.
