Charles Barkley Comments on Warriors After Adding Kevin Durant in Free Agency

Tim DanielsJul 22, 2016

Outspoken TNT analyst Charles Barkley still isn't convinced the Golden State Warriors are heading toward an extended run of championship success despite adding prized free agent Kevin Durant to an already star-studded roster this summer.

Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle passed along comments the 11-time NBA All-Star made Friday before his round in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament. He doesn't believe adding another high-end perimeter player alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson was the answer.

"It's different now; Kevin changes the whole dynamic," Barkley said. "But you've still got to rebound and play defense. That's the key."

He added: "It's exactly what I said was going to happen: If they played a couple good teams, they were going to wear down. They weren't going to make all those jump shots. … They've got a great organization. I love Steph and Klay. But I don't think small ball works, and it didn't work in the Finals."

Barkley chalked up the Warriors' title in 2015 to good luck because they faced teams dealing with injury problems while they remained mostly healthy.

The comments don't come as much surprise, of course. The 1993 NBA MVP has consistently expressed doubts about Golden State since the team's rise to prominence, because the roster is built on terrific outside shooting rather than size and power in the frontcourt.

Furthermore, he previously expressed dissatisfaction with Durant's choice to join the Warriors to create a superteam rather than compete against them, per ESPN.com:

"

I was disappointed. I was disappointed like I was disappointed when LeBron went to Miami. Kevin is a terrific player. He's a good kid. But just disappointed with the fact that he weakened another team and he's gonna kind of gravy train on a terrific Warriors team. Just disappointed from a competitive standpoint. Because just like it meant more to LeBron to win one in Cleveland, it would mean more to Kevin to win one in Oklahoma than it would be in Golden State.

"

Barkley is entertaining, and plenty of people probably agree with his stance, especially his fellow players from the 1980s and '90s. Big-name players joining other stars is a trend often discussed by those who believe the level of competition was better in the old days.

That said, trying to talk down the Warriors at this point feels like a reach. They are coming off two straight NBA Finals appearances out of the tougher Western Conference, winning one championship and coming within a single victory of another.
