WWE NXT Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from June 29

Erik BeastonJun 30, 2016

The June 29 episode of NXT on WWE Network may not have had the star power of Samoa Joe, Finn Balor or Shinsuke Nakamura, but it was a focused episode that opted to build the undercard, allowing several young stars in the tag team and women's divisions to earn "winner" status for the night.

Alexa Bliss and Carmella kicked things off, each jockeying for position as they chase aspirations of becoming the NXT women's champion. Their match demonstrated their growth both as workers and performers, and neither really lost, despite one suffering a defeat.

Elsewhere on the show, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa attempted to continue their winning ways. To do so, they had to get past The Hype Bros, who have patiently waited their turn for an NXT Tag Team Championship opportunity.

They weren't the only ones after that set of titles by night's end.

Which Superstars emerged as the biggest winners from the June 29 episode, and which weren't so lucky?

Winner: Alexa Bliss

No longer content to stay in the background of the women's division, Bliss continued her march to a championship opportunity Wednesday night with an impressive victory over Carmella. The Ohio native and former fitness model continues to impress with strong facial expressions and body language.

Beyond those traits, though, is a young woman whose understanding of in-ring chemistry is growing with every passing match. The way she flashes a look of disgust to the audience after every move will do her wonders when she makes it to Raw and SmackDown, as those two shows are far more character-driven than NXT.

With Nia Jax defeated at TakeOver: The End and a lack of other credible heel challengers to Asuka's women's title, Bliss is the overwhelming favorite to step up and wage war with the Japanese star sooner than later.

Whether Bayley provides the next roadblock for Bliss is the question.

Loser: Andrade "Cien" Almas

The babyface push for Almas continues to fail, as seen in his match against Noah Potjes Wednesday night. Rather than being respectful of his lucha libre heritage, he has been presented as an arrogant punk kid who thrives on making his opponents look foolish.

Add an underwhelming arsenal and a look straight out of Marty Jannetty's 1994 wardrobe and you have a recipe for disappointment.

Like the other high-profile recent debut, No Way Jose, the hype was there, but the actual performances of the Superstars themselves have been lacking, leading to a distinct absence of excitement surrounding them. In the case of Jose, he at least has a catchy theme song and an energy that generates a reaction.

Almas doesn't even have that.

He is in desperate need of a breakout performance, a match that leaves no doubts about his skills and reminds fans of why he was once considered one of Triple H's prize hirings. Until then, he will look out of place in NXT—a Superstar whose character is tone-deaf to what the rabid fanbase appreciates and wants to see more often.

Winners: The Hype Bros

We already knew how awesome Gargano and Ciampa were before Wednesday night. There was no denying the greatness of American Alpha or The Revival.

What no one could have foreseen was just how outstanding a performance The Hype Bros would turn in as they battled Gargano and Ciampa in the main event.

Zack Ryder has long been underestimated. He is a great professional wrestler with a knack for positioning his trademark spots at the right time to generate the best reaction. Mojo Rawley, long criticized for his clunky and uncoordinated approach to his in-ring game, has improved by leaps and bounds and brings an undeniable energy to every match.

Their styles meshed perfectly with those of their opponents, and their match was better than anyone could have expected, which is why it was a bit disappointing to see Ryder and Rawley dismissed in the manner they were when the focus turned to Gargano and Ciampa, American Alpha and The Revival.

Is the team a credible threat to the tag titles? Not really, but to take them out of the picture in such a disrespectful way just moments after their best performance to date was a questionable decision, to say the least.

Regardless of whether or not they ever end up in the title picture, Ryder and Rawley can rest assured that they did their part, performing up to the level of their competition and delivering one of the most surprising main events of the year.
