Andre Roberts to Sign with Lions: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Timothy RappJun 13, 2016

The Detroit Lions have reportedly signed wide receiver Andre Roberts to a one-year deal, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

Roberts, 28, caught 11 passes for 135 yards with Washington last season in nine games. He also registered a kickoff return for a touchdown.

Roberts, who's spent much of his career as a third or fourth receiver, has never quite been able to replicate his success in 2012, when he notched 64 receptions for 759 yards and five touchdowns with the Arizona Cardinals.

All three marks were career highs, and he hasn't reached 500 receiving yards since. He was squeezed out of a deep receiving group in Washington when the team drafted Josh Doctson in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft, leaving him as the odd man out and leading to his release.

For the Lions, this offseason has been a transformative one at the wide receiver position. Superstar Calvin Johnson retired, while the team signed Marvin Jones, Jeremy Kerley and Roberts. Golden Tate and Jones are penciled in as the likely starters, while Kerley will likely settle into the slot role and Roberts will fight for the WR4 designation.

Tight end Eric Ebron will likely play a bigger role in the passing game as well with Megatron retired, while running back Theo Riddick had 80 receptions last season and will continue to serve as Matt Stafford's safety valve.

Johnson left a big void in Detroit's passing game, so there are targets to be had for players like Roberts. While he isn't a dynamic, game-changing player, he has the opportunity to carve out a solid role for himself in Detroit.
