Vincent Kompany Injury: Manchester City Star Injures Groin, No Return Date Set
Manchester City have suffered a major setback after it was reported captain Vincent Kompany is set for a return to the treatment table.
Kompany was forced to withdraw from Wednesday's fixture against Swansea City with a groin problem, and the club's official website confirmed the issue is being treated, although no return date has been set. It was the defender's first appearance for the Sky Blues since May.
City manager Pep Guardiola is still getting settled at the Etihad Stadium, but the ex-Barcelona chief may have to become accustomed to the 30-year-old's recurring injury woes.
According to Transfermarkt, the Belgium centre-back suffered a total of seven separate injuries over the course of the 2015-16 campaign, missing a combined 39 games across all competitions.
Kompany appeared in just 22 matches last season, but City were noticeably weaker without his leading presence in central defence, and Guardiola will need reliable reinforcements to hand.
The Premier League giants will now look to the likes of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi to tide things over in the core of defence until Kompany makes his return. Aleksandar Kolarov has also shown his proficiency in the position as of late.
Stones' performances during Kompany's absence have been particularly impressive to start the season, and the City captain could well now look at his new team-mate more as competition and less as mere cover for a role at centre-back.
