Liverpool Transfer News: Marco Reus and Mario Gotze Wanted, Latest Rumours

Tom SunderlandMay 10, 2016

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will reportedly revive his German connections this summer in a bid to bring both Marco Reus and Mario Gotze to Anfield, and Adam Lallana may be sold in order to finance their transfers.

The Sun's Mike McGrath surmised Lallana's departure could pave the way for Reus or Gotze to arrive on Merseyside, and the Daily Star's Alex Harris recently reported the latter Germany international is set to leave Bayern Munich.

Klopp is familiar with both players following their time together at the Westfalenstadion, and while Dortmund and Bayern have been consistent Bundesliga title contenders of late, the Premier League may appeal as a summer destination.

Speculation linking Liverpool with Germany's top talents inevitably rose after Klopp's October arrival at Anfield, and the manager told broadcaster Sport1 Merseyside is now "more interesting" to Bundesliga stars (h/t ESPN FC's Stephan Uersfeld):

"

I don't believe anybody needs to fear us, but it's a fact that through me Liverpool have become more interesting for German players. If our interest matches with that of the player, we won't back away from signing him just because he's German -- that would be nonsense -- but we are not limited to the Bundesliga.

We are looking globally, but more important than where a player is from is that he's the right player for us.

"

Klopp will have a better idea than most as to whether Reus or Gotze could be seen as the "right player" for his side, but his ties to each undoubtedly give the Reds an edge no other English outfit can boast.

Change is afoot at Dortmund after ESPN FC reported star centre-back Mats Hummels could also leave the club this summer, a move that may influence Reus' opinion of the club's direction. Breathe Sport highlighted this won't be the first time a high-profile team-mate has left the club:

After transforming the Black and Yellows back into German title contenders during his seven-year reign in Dortmund, Klopp is having a similar effect with UEFA Europa League finalists Liverpool.

Gotze has featured as little more than a fringe figure for stretches of his tenure under outbound Bayern boss Pep Guardiola, but Yahoo's Andrew Gaffney has teased the thought of the player leaving the Allianz Arena for nothing next year:

Lallana's potential reunion with former Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino at White Hart Lane would help to bring Liverpool a reported £20 million, but even that may not be enough to pay for either one of Reus or Gotze's transfers.

Both Dortmund and Bayern are sure to be difficult negotiators as they seek to keep hold of their talismanic talents, but Klopp's old ties to each mean rumours of an Anfield get-together aren't likely to simmer anytime soon.

The Reds have also received a boost in their hunt for soon-to-be out-of-contract Nice winger Hatem Ben Arfa after Sky Sports pundit Guillem Balague confirmed Barcelona won't pursue the ex-Newcastle United misfit:

"Ben Arfa is not an option for Barcelona," he said. "He was considered because he is available for free, but Barcelona have now said 'no' to that possibility."

Jonathan Green of the Daily Star reported this as a boost for Liverpool and Chelsea, both of whom have been linked with moves for the winger, who has 17 goals in 33 Ligue 1 outings this season.
