Liverpool Transfer News: Steven Gerrard Comments on Reds Return, Latest Rumours

Christopher SimpsonMay 9, 2016

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has announced his intentions to return to the city from Los Angeles "sooner rather than later," and he is sure he will "represent Liverpool football club" at some point in the future.

Per Jamie Anderson of the Daily Star, the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder said:

"

I will be going home at some point.

I don't want to start any unnecessary rumours. I'm really happy where I am at the moment. But I'm sure somewhere down the line I will represent Liverpool football club.

I miss my friends and my family. I miss a bit of cold weather.

I miss going to the games. I spent 35 years in Liverpool. Liverpool's my home; it always will be. This is my second home for a short period of time.

Sooner rather than later I will return to where I'm comfortable with my people - and that's Liverpool.

I'm getting on a little bit now so eventually we'll move back and settle in Liverpool.

The 35-year-old's comments would suggest he'll make his return at the end of the current Major League Soccer season, when his contract with the Galaxy expires.

Given his age, his intention to represent the Reds—with whom he spent almost his entire career—is likely to be in a coaching or managerial capacity rather than on the field.

Indeed, in his final years at the club, his mobility seemed to drop off dramatically, and with manager Jurgen Klopp's high-pressing, high-energy style now imprinted on the team, Gerrard would likely struggle to keep up.

The midfielder did roll back the years on Sunday, though, as he found the net against the New England Revolution:

Nevertheless, while an emotional return to Anfield as a player may be welcomed by some Reds fans, a staff role would seem to be the best option for all parties.

Meanwhile, according to German outlet Sport Bild (h/t Calciomercato, via the Daily Mirror's Aaron Flanagan), Liverpool are interested in Hoffenheim youngster Nadiem Amiri, who has also been scouted by Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur.

Per OptaFranz, the 19-year-old has impressed for the struggling Bundesliga team, while journalist Alex Chaffer noted he deserved his call-up to Germany's under-21 side:

According to Squawka, the playmaker has created 34 chances for Hoffenheim since his promotion to the first team earlier in the season—no mean feat for a side who have been fighting for survival.

The Reds have room in their attacking midfield three, with Adam Lallana and Jordon Ibe yet to cement the position as their own.

Amiri certainly has promise, but it doesn't seem likely he's ready to come straight into Liverpool's midfield and start regularly. He has the potential to be a star in the future, but if the Reds are targeting an instant impact, they should look elsewhere.
