Conor McGregor Posts Floyd Mayweather Jr. Fight 'Poster' on Instagram
UFC star Conor McGregor has posted a mock-up fight poster on social media depicting himself and retired boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. face-to-face.
There has been speculation swirling that the duo could potentially face off in a bout, and the Irishman has done little to quash any speculation with this latest Instagram bulletin:
According to the Sun’s James Beal and Matt Heath-Smith, the two combat sports stars have been in talks for a while about a possible bout.
Mayweather, speaking to FightHype.com (h/t the Irish Independent) declined the chance to deny the bout could happen too. "It’s possible," he said. "It was a name that was shot at me. The rumours that you all have been hearing are the rumours that I started. It may not be a rumour. So keep your fingers crossed, it may be a boxer vs. an MMA fighter."
Here is a listen to what the retired fighter had to say in full:
Even so, it'd be a major surprise to see these two square off in a boxing fight. McGregor, while a fine striker and excellent stand-up fighter, wouldn't have the class to cope with someone like Mayweather in the ring; the man known as Money retired last year with a 49-0 professional record and is rated as one of the greatest fighters of all time.
There would be obvious benefits for both men, most notably lucrative ones, as each is arguably the most high-profile figure in their respective discipline. Nevertheless, not only does McGregor have a contract in place with UFC which would prevent this kind of showdown, even a man with the Notorious' confidence, talent and ambition would find it tough to get near Mayweather.
