Matt Slauson to Chargers: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Timothy RappMay 7, 2016

Free-agent offensive lineman Matt Slauson signed a two-year deal with the San Diego Chargers, the team announced on May 9.

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle and Adam Caplan of ESPN first reported the deal on May 7. Caplan reported Thursday Slauson's deal is worth $3 million with $600,000 guaranteed.

The Chicago Bears cut Slauson, 30, this offseason after three years with the team.

He became expendable after the Bears made the decision to move Kyle Long back to right guard, per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. Plus, Ted Larsen and Manny Ramirez have experience at guard, and 2016 second-round pick Cody Whitehair is capable of playing all over the line.

Slauson has started 85 games with the Bears and New York Jets in his career. He is capable of playing both guard and center, offering San Diego some versatility in the interior of the offensive line, though 81 of his career starts have come at left guard, per ESPN.com.

The Chargers can use all the help they can get after an injury-ravaged season on the line in 2015, however, as Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune wrote:

"

The Chargers are coming off a season in which they trotted out 24 unique combinations on the offensive line. While that level of injury-induced instability is unlikely to recur, the experience to some degree is a running theme. Six different players saw time at left guard, three at center and five at right guard in 2015. A year earlier, the team became the first since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger to start five different centers in the same season.

"

According to ESPN.com, the Chargers are interested in playing him at center, though he'll be competing with 2016 third-round pick Max Tuerk for that role. Tuerk is coming off October surgery for a torn ACL but is expected to be ready to go for the 2016 season.

Slauson will give the Chargers a veteran option at center if Tuerk needs time to adjust to the NFL game or solid depth on the interior of the offensive line if the rookie can start right away.
