England have some key players missing due to injury, most notably striker Wayne Rooney and midfield schemer Jack Wilshere. As for Germany, the reigning World Cup holders have a fitness concern over cerebral playmaker Mesut Ozil.

England boss Roy Hodgson isn't just missing Rooney and Wilshere. He'll also rue Manchester City pair Joe Hart and Raheem Sterling suffering injuries during a recent derby loss to Manchester United.

Fortunately, Hart's deputy is Southampton's Fraser Forster, one of the most miserly goalkeepers in the Premier League. Alternatively, Hodgson could turn to Stoke City stopper Jack Butland, a rising star.

Having this kind of strength in depth proves 'keeper is one of the strongest positions in Hodgson's squad. He'll be hoping midfield proves the same after he called up Leicester City's Danny Drinkwater for a first cap.

The Three Lions boss espoused Drinkwater's fine season for the Foxes, per the Daily Telegraph"What he has done has been pretty evident to everybody. He's had a fantastic season in a team that's having a fantastic season."

Drinkwater certainly has been a linchpin in the middle for Leicester this term. His savvy, tenacity and vision from the base of midfield have been vital qualities in the Foxes' march to the summit of England's top flight.

They are also attributes Hodgson is keen to encourage from the player tasked with shielding the back four and starting attacks. It's why he puts a classy ball-player like Wilshere in that position.

But Drinkwater is more direct as a passer than Arsenal's oft-injured pint-sized playmaker. His accurate long balls into the channels have consistently sent jet-heeled Leicester striker Jamie Vardy free.

Danny Welbeck is one England striker who could certainly benefit from Drinkwater's varied range of distribution. But the Gunners attacker must first prove his fitness.

That's required a delicate balancing act since his return from a lengthy knee injury. In fact, Arsenal have requested Welbeck miss training with England as part of a "personalised programme," according to James Benge of the London Evening Standard.

Hodgson should hope Welbeck is ready to play. The former Manchester United man has been exceptional in recent matches, showcasing perceptive movement, lightning pace and awesome power. Welbeck has also displayed improvement in front of goal, netting four times since his return, per WhoScored.com.

Welbeck's Gunners team-mate Ozil also needs to show he's ready to start. The 27-year-old suffered an ankle problem during Arsenal's recent 2-0 away win at Everton. But he's since declared himself fit enough to feature, per German publication Bild (h/t another report from Benge for the London Evening Standard).

Ozil remains critical to the way Germany create chances. His flair, cheetah-fast speed of thought and subtle runs pull markers out of position and put forwards in one-on-one situations.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp recently told Subway (h/t Jack Bezants of the Daily Mail) how his country's way of playing is heavily reliant on the skills of technicians like Ozil: "So we create, we help them developing, play in small spaces, making this, the quick players here. And we took always the tall players like (Andre) Schurrle, (Mesut) Ozil, Marco Reus, they are all six foot or something like this, so a good size for an offensive player."

Having Ozil alongside flair players like Real Madrid's Toni Kroos and Schalke 04's Julian Draxler would give Hodgson's defence plenty of headaches.

Expect Germany to flex their muscles emphatically as they get ready for the big tournament, while England's injury absences will prove too difficult to overcome.
