Rod Streater to Chiefs: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Alec NathanMar 12, 2016

Once upon a time, Rod Streater looked like a potential breakout star at wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders. But after a 2015 season that included a slew of healthy scratches, Streater will look to revive his career with the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to ESPN.com's Adam Schefter, Streater agreed to a one-year, $4.8 million deal with Kansas City. Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star confirmed the report.

As an undrafted free agent out of Temple, Streater made modest strides as a rookie. Over the course of 16 games—including two starts—Streater tallied 39 catches for 584 yards and three touchdowns. Building on that momentum, Streater struck back with a career-best 60 catches for 888 yards and four scores in 2013.

However, that was as strong as Streater's run in Oakland would get. The 6'3'', 200-pound wideout suffered a fractured foot three games into the 2014 season before he was limited to a single appearance in 2015 as he tumbled down the Raiders depth chart.

But despite being inactive most weeks, Streater drew praise from head coach Jack Del Rio.

"It’s a tough situation for him," Del Rio said in November, per NBC Bay Area's Doug Williams. "He’s done everything we’ve asked. He’s a great young man. He practices hard every week to keep himself prepared."

Now signed with the Chiefs, Streater has a real chance to resurrect his career and emerge as one of quarterback Alex Smith's primary targets on the outside.

Beyond veteran wideout Jeremy Maclin, the Chiefs have been pressed for reliable options—which makes Streater a candidate to start if he can supplant Albert Wilson in training camp.

And as NFL.com's Chris Wessleing wrote, Streater may very well have the edge on Wilson even though he's breaking into a new system because he "works the underneath routes as a possession receiver with strong run-after-catch ability."

In Kansas City's West Coast offense that emphasizes short, quick and accurate throws, Streater may very well wind up becoming a diamond-in-the-rough-type find for head coach Andy Reid.

So while his career has been defined by ups and downs to this point, Streater is in a position to facilitate a comeback on a receiver-needy team following a trying year in the Bay Area.
