LeGarrette Blount Re-Signs with Patriots: Latest Contract Details, Reaction

Tim DanielsApr 12, 2016

Veteran running back LeGarrette Blount reached an agreement to return to the New England Patriots on Tuesday, the team announced.

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald first reported the deal, with Ian Rapoport of NFL Network confirming the news, adding Blount signed a one-year deal.

Albert Breer of NFL Network added the deal includes $760,000 in base salary with a $100,000 signing bonus, $100,000 roster bonus and $1 million in incentives.

Blount enjoyed a solid 2015 campaign with the Patriots before it came to a premature end after a Week 14 hip injury. He rushed for a shade over 700 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games as part of the team's multifaceted backfield attack.

He's bounced around the league since going undrafted in 2010. He originally signed with the Tennessee Titans but ended up making his debut with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he rushed for over 1,000 yards during his rookie campaign.

The Oregon product also sandwiched a stop with the Pittsburgh Steelers between his two stints with New England over the past few years.

At 29, he's still a powerful runner capable of handling extensive early-down work. Of course, that's assuming he manages to make a complete recovery from those previous hip issues. Howe previously reported surgery wasn't necessary.

If he's back to full strength by the start of next season, it should make him a nice value signing at this stage of free agency. Mike Clay of ESPN noted his ability to break tackles has been among the best in the league:

Ultimately, he decided returning to the Patriots represented the best option available, and it does make a lot of sense. New England has a few versatile running backs in Dion Lewis and James White, but it still needed a bruiser.

Blount should fill that heavy-hitting role once again. Expect him to see a majority of his work on first and second downs, as well as near the goal line. He's a nice piece for the team to have, even though it features a pass-first attack under the guidance of Tom Brady.

The return of Blount also leaves the Patriots with one less void to fill as they look to gear up for another Super Bowl charge next season.
