WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from December 31
Every week on Bleacher Report, I take an in-depth look at WWE SmackDown to recap the action, offer analysis and grade the matches, segments and anything else that takes place on the show, as well as make a few predictions for future events.
Not only was this the final SmackDown of 2015, but it was also the last episode to air on Syfy before the blue brand moves to the USA Network.
Various Superstars and Divas recorded special messages to wish everyone a happy new year, and just about every segment featured someone acknowledging the end of 2015.
It's been an up-and-down year for WWE. We have seen tons of incredible matches, but it seems like the fans were still unhappy due to uncreative and predictable storylines.
Hopefully 2016 sees the company make some changes for the better, but for now, let's take a look at everything that happened on the last SmackDown of the year.
The New Day vs. Dudley Boyz and Kalisto
1 of 7The final SmackDown of 2015 opened with The New Day coming out for a promo. It talked about the new year and how it doesn't need to make any resolutions because it is already perfect.
Kalisto and an injured Sin Cara came out to taunt The New Day about not winning the Slammy for Tag Team of the Year, and they were soon followed by The Dudley Boyz. Kalisto joined Bubba Ray and D-Von in a six-man tag match to kick off the action.
All six men contributed to a good match. It was surprising to see the opening promo and bout given a full half hour, but it never felt like anyone wore out his welcome because the action was quick and everyone meshed well.
The Dudleys and Kalisto picked up the win after a great sequence of finishers. To cap things off, Xavier Woods was powerbombed through the special New Year's table Bubba and D-Von brought with them.
Grade: B+
Notes and Highlights
- WWE must have edited in crowd responses. The New Day never gets that much heat during its entrance.
- Woods and Big E have been good on the mic since they were in NXT, but how much Kofi Kingston has improved since joining the group has been impressive. He went years without getting better, and then The New Day brought out the best in him.
- When did Sin Cara's tattoo get bigger?
- Bubba Ray hits the best back drop in the business.
- Booker T pulled a Michael Cole and incorrectly called a spinebuster a sidewalk slam.
Tyler Breeze vs. Goldust
2 of 7Goldust and Tyler Breeze had a singles match to follow up on the segment from Raw where Goldust invaded Breeze's VIP area.
They put on a decent performance in the short amount of time they had, but it didn't feel like the feud would continue past this match, which is a little disappointing.
Breeze used the ropes for leverage to pick up a dirty pin, so it's possible Goldust will be looking for revenge next week to keep things going.
After the match was over, Breeze and Summer Rae announced that they would be going their separate ways, making this the first mutual breakup on TV since Jerry Seinfeld and his finacee broke up on Seinfeld.
Grade: C
Notes and Highlights
- It's great to see Goldust in the ring again, but it's a little sad that he got the jobber entrance for this match.
- WWE, a PG product, was brought to you by the ultraviolent film The Hateful Eight. That makes total sense.
- Goldust debuted the year Breeze was born and can still move around like he is a young man. That is impressive.
The Usos vs. Braun Strowman and Luke Harper
3 of 7The Usos and The Wyatt Family have had some great matches, but that was before Braun Strowman entered into the mix. His limitations in the ring kept this from being as good as it could have been had it been Erick Rowan in his place.
Luckily, Luke Harper and both Usos helped make up for Strowman's limited arsenal. Bray Wyatt was conspicuous by his absence in this one, but it didn't take away from the match. If anything, it let the other members of the group stand on their own two feet.
The Usos put up a good effort, but Jey Uso eventually succumbed to Strowman's finisher and passed out. Rowan tried to get involved, but in the end, he had no impact on the outcome.
Grade: B-
Notes and Highlights
- I like how everyone is bringing their Slammys to the ring. It makes the award seem a little more important, though not by much.
- Harper has tons of different colored bandanas but only one tank top he never washes.
- Everyone is complaining about The Usos winning the Tag Team of the Year Slammy, but they consistently put on great matches. The New Day is better on the mic but isn't as exciting to watch in the ring most of the time.
Brie Bella and Alicia Fox vs. Naomi and Tamina
4 of 7Alicia Fox and Brie Bella took on Naomi and Tamina in a tag team match without the third members of their respective groups at ringside to support them. We all know Nikki Bella is healing from an injury, but there was no explanation as to why Sasha Banks was absent.
Tamina dominated the early part of the match, but Brie and Foxy made a comeback and picked up the win thanks to Brie's signature facebuster.
This was a short match, but what we saw was actually pretty good. All four women tried their best to make the most of the time they had.
Grade: C+
Notes and Highlights
- Tamina looks like she has lost a little weight. She also looks a little quicker in the ring because of it.
- Are Brie and Fox babyfaces without Nikki Bella? It seems like that is what's happening.
- Fox should just go for it and start styling her hair into a mohawk. It would separate her from every other Diva and give her a totally unique look.
Dolph Ziggler vs. Bo Dallas
5 of 7Bo Dallas and Dolph Ziggler had a predictable singles match that saw Ziggler pick up his final win of 2015. They didn't do anything special, but everything was smooth, so it wasn't like it was hard to watch.
If Dallas can get himself back into the kind of shape he was in during his NXT run, he might become relevant again in 2016.
The match didn't last that long and didn't produce any memorable moments, but it was nice to see Ziggler standing tall with a decisive victory.
Grade: C-
Notes and Highlights
- Dallas and Curtis Axel had a funny exchange backstage earlier in the show. Dallas also ran into Ziggler, which is why this match was booked.
- It looks like Ziggler is using the Superkick as his regular finisher going forward. That is good news because the Zig Zag was a terrible finishing move.
- Ziggler saying Dallas looked like the New Year's baby was kind of funny.
Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose vs. Sheamus and Kevin Owens
6 of 7The last match of 2015 saw Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns team up to battle the men they beat for the titles around their waists, Sheamus and Kevin Owens.
These are four men known for their brawling ability, so it comes as no surprise that this match was less about technical wrestling and more about beating the snot out of each other.
WWE obviously wanted to end the year with a babyface victory, so Reigns and Ambrose picked up the win after Owens was disqualified for pulling Reigns' crotch into the ring post, which is something plenty of people have done without being disqualified.
Sheamus and Owens continued to beat up Reigns until Ambrose got involved. Owens tried to powerbomb him through a table just like he did on Raw, but Reigns put a stop to it with a Superman punch.
The night ended with the intercontinental and WWE world heavyweight champions celebrating with the crowd.
Grade: B
Notes and Highlights
- It's impressive how Reigns has managed to work hard enough to get the crowd back on his side. He was being booed up until a couple of months ago.
- It's funny to see Owens and Sheamus teaming up after so many people thought Owens would be part of the League of Nations stable. They exchanged some insults on Twitter, but that wasn't really part of a storyline as much as it was them messing with each other.
- I wonder why Rusev, Alberto Del Rio and Bad News Barrett were nowhere to be found. Was WWE doing a live event the same night this was taped?
Final Thoughts and Predictions
7 of 7The last SmackDown of 2015 was a decent show, but it stands to reason WWE was saving anything special for next week's big debut on the USA Network.
It was hard not to notice how four out of the six contests were tag team matches, which just proves how they can provide more excitement than singles bouts.
The New Day, Kalisto and The Dudley Boyz stole the show in the first bout, but The Usos and The Wyatt Family had a fun bout, too. The main event was good, but the DQ finish hurt the overall quality a little.
The blue brand moves to a new network next week, so let's hope WWE has some big things planned for the first SmackDown of 2016.
This week's predictions will focus on the next year as a whole instead of just the immediate future.
Predictions
- Brock Lesnar will win the Royal Rumble match.
- Reigns will lose the title to Seth Rollins when he returns from injury.
- Bayley, Finn Balor, Sami Zayn and Samoa Joe will be called up to the main roster in the first half of the year.
- We will see at least one person win his first WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
- Bray Wyatt will turn babyface at some point, but his followers may turn against him because of it.
What did you think of the final SmackDown of 2015?
