The Vikings announced Smith will be available against Green Bay on Saturday.
Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press reported on Dec. 6 that "it's not out of the question he could be out the remainder of the regular season."
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on the morning of Dec. 7 that Smith's high ankle sprain is considered "really bad" and "severe." However, Rapoport noted that "no one [is] ruling him out for '16 because he plays [through] so much."
Smith Enjoying Another Strong Season for Vikings
In his fifth year out of Notre Dame, Smith is in the midst of another solid season. He has 84 combined tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery this season.
Smith signed a five-year, $51.25 million contract last offseason that made him the highest-paid safety in league history.
"When we're in that type of situation, maybe I'll be down near the line of scrimmage a little more," Smith said of his role, per Matt Vensel of the Star Tribune. "So they like to move us around. It's fun because you get to be more than just a deep player. You get to be all over the field. I think that's how you can make a huge impact."
