World Gymnastics Championships 2015: Saturday Results and Reaction

Mike ChiariOct 31, 2015

Day 9 at the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships featured several men's and women's apparatus finals, but the highlight was undoubtedly an unprecedented four-way tie for gold in the uneven bars.

Madison Kocian of the United States, China's Yilin Fan and Russians Viktoria Komova and Daria Spiridonova all produced identical scores of 15.366 on the uneven bars, which made for a crowded podium.

According to Nick Zaccardi of NBC Olympic Talk, the International Gymnastics Federation reported it was the first four-way tie for gold in the history of women's gymnastics.

The unique turn of events took many by surprise, including Team USA gymnast Aly Raisman:

Reigning Olympic all-around champion Gabby Douglas just missed out on the podium, as she finished fifth with a score 15.133, but the Americans were still in a celebratory mood due to the 18-year-old Kocian's performance.

Former Olympic all-around gold medalist Nastia Liukin was among those to congratulate Kocian for her golden moment on Twitter:

Perhaps most importantly, though, Zaccardi believes Kocian's showing may have gone a long way toward locking up a spot on Team USA's roster for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro:

Kocian wasn't the only American to haul in some hardware Saturday, as Simone Biles—who won the women's all-around gold medal for the third consecutive year Thursday—took bronze in the vault.

Biles' failure to execute clean landings in her two attempts allowed Russia's Maria Paseka to take gold and Un Jong Hong of North Korea to win silver.

Although Biles took silver in the vault in both 2013 and 2014, she wasn't at all disappointed with her performance Saturday, according to Zaccardi.

"My second vault, which is my more difficult vault, wasn't ready yet," Biles said. "[U.S. national team coordinator] Martha [Karolyi] said, 'It's fine, just do what you can do and see what happens.' So it's just an honor that I even got on the podium."

Biles will have a chance to add to her already impressive collection of medals Sunday, as she was the top qualifier in both the balance beam and floor exercise.

The Americans didn't enjoy quite as much success on the men's side Saturday, as they failed to come away with a medal in the floor exercise, pommel horse or rings.

Brandon Wynn came closest with a fifth-place finish on the rings, but his score of 15.600 wasn't enough to crack the top three, as Eleftherios Petrounias of Greece, and Chinese gymnasts Hao You and Yang Liu took gold, silver and bronze respectively.

Australian gymnast Mary-Anne Monckton was among those who were especially impressed with Petrounias' routine:

Perhaps nobody had a better day than Great Britain's Max Whitlock on Saturday. In addition to winning silver in floor exercise behind Japan's Kenzo Shirai and ahead of bronze medalist Rayderley Miguel Zapata Santana of Spain, Whitlock took gold in the pommel horse.

According to Susan Swarbrick of the Herald, that represented a historic moment in the history of British men's gymnastics:

Fellow Brit Louis Smith won silver on the pommel, and Armenia's Harutyun Merdinyan secured the bronze. After becoming the first British man to win a world championship gold, Whitlock was beyond thrilled, per BBC.

"I had dreamed of this moment but never felt I would get emotional," Whitlock said. "Louis did an amazing job to get a massive 16 so to beat that I am over the moon."

Saturday's slate was among the most exciting and unpredictable groups of events at the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships thus far, but the action is far from over.

The competition will conclude Sunday with the remaining apparatus finals, which means five additional world champions will be crowned—or perhaps even more than that considering what occurred on the uneven bars Saturday.
