Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
When it comes to a fun, holiday-themed show like Thursday night's broadcast, there is typically no room for storyline progression or any really noteworthy developments. Not only did WWE Creative prove that notion incorrect, but it also put the spotlight on "The Lunatic Fringe," Dean Ambrose, who has been forced into the background in recent weeks.
At a time when the writing staff is regularly criticized for the lackluster programming it has produced over the last few months, it stepped up to the plate and knocked Thursday's show out of the proverbial park.
Like any episode of Raw or SmackDown, it still had its definitive winners and losers. Who were they, and why did they land on whichever side?
Let's take a look.
Winner: Bo Dallas
There were two running gags throughout Thursday's show. The first was Dean Ambrose's search for two partners to back him up against The Wyatt Family in the night's main event. The other involved Bo Dallas, complete with the old "white sheet as a ghost" costume, attempting to scare his fellow WWE Superstars and Divas.
As "Boo" Dallas, he was completely over the top and ridiculous. At the same time, he was absolutely hilarious as he channeled his inner child, attempting to catch his co-workers off guard. He failed to do so with Renee Young and Cesaro but did finally cause "The World's Strongest Man," Mark Henry, to jump and toss his phone.
It was a mistake, though, as the former world champion punched Dallas unconscious to end his night.
Dallas has been incredibly underused over the last year, for reasons only management knows. But as he showed Thursday night, he has the ability to fill the role vacated by Santino Marella when he left due to neck injuries. He can be the zany comedic figure who changes up the tone of the show from time to time.
He succeeded immensely in doing just that on SmackDown.
Losers: The Dudley Boyz
As if the failure to update their 15-year-old onscreen personae weren't bad enough, Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley have seemingly seen the end of their hunt for tag team gold.
Thursday night, they competed in a Fatal 4-Way match that also featured The Ascension, The Lucha Dragons and Sheamus and King Barrett. Sin Cara and Kalisto would win the match while the Dudleys were left to brawl out of the arena with Barrett and the Celtic Warrior, almost as if the win were secondary.
The Dudley Boyz have lost a ton of momentum since returning to WWE the night after SummerSlam. Now, they may have to live with the realization that time has passed them on and that duos like the aforementioned Lucha Dragons, The New Day and the soon-to-return Usos are much more exciting and enthralling.
Winner: Dean Ambrose
Make no mistake about it: The star of Thursday's show was Dean Ambrose. The Lunatic Fringe was unwavering as he accepted The Wyatt Family's challenge for a match in the night's main event, then was wildly entertaining as he interacted with both Cesaro and Ryback in backstage segments to set them up as his partners.
He received the biggest pop of the night (which should be of no surprise to anyone who has been watching the show over the last year) and was incredibly crisp and exciting, exploding into the squared circle as the match progressed.
For the first time since his program with Seth Rollins wrapped up at Money in the Bank, Ambrose looked like the star he is. Now it should be interesting to see if WWE continues to push him as such without the services of John Cena and Randy Orton for the foreseeable future.
