Paul Coro of AZCentral.com reported Booker is dealing with a sprained toe, adding Brandon Knight would start in his place against the Clippers.
Booker Off to Strong Start to Sophomore Season
This is a disappointing setback for Booker, who appears to be a blossoming star at the NBA level.
He averaged 13.8 points per game behind 34.3 percent shooting from three-point range as a rookie and has followed that up with 15.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest in 2016-17. He can stretch the floor and take advantage of openings created by Eric Bledsoe and Knight's penetration.
In addition to his value as an offensive force, Booker provides injury insurance for Bledsoe. Bledsoe played in only 31 games last season and 43 games in 2013-14. When healthy, he is arguably the best player on Phoenix's roster. After averaging 20.4 points per game last year, he will likely be asked to shoulder more of the scoring load until Booker returns.
Knight, Tyler Ulis and Leandro Barbosa will also likely play more minutes in the backcourt. Each is a capable scoring threat who can set up teammates when opposing defenses collapse.
Considering the Suns probably aren't championship contenders this season, making sure Booker is healthy before he returns will prove to be more important in the long run than rushing him back. That is especially the case with so many other guards on Phoenix's roster.
