CBS Sports: Dodgers Not Trading Puig
According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Dodgers have "assured" Puig he won't be traded during the 2015 season:
"Puig, the mercurial and occasionally controversial talent, was reassured within the last couple days in New York after hearing rumors he could be dealt to the Reds or elsewhere for needed pitching, according to those sources. Puig took the extra step of inquiring about his status after hearing the rumors.
"
With the Dodgers having a surplus of outfielders with players like Joc Pederson, Carl Crawford and Andre Ethier also on the roster, Puig's name has been brought up in potential trade discussions.
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reported July 19 that the whispers of frustration with Puig in the Dodgers locker room were turning into screams.
"The noise is growing louder on Puig and his low favorability among teammates, according to a major league source," Cafardo wrote.
That report came two weeks after Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports wrote about Molly Knight's new book on the Dodgers, titled The Best Team Money Can Buy, including a quote from one anonymous player who said trading Puig would be "addition by subtraction."
It would be hard for the Dodgers to justify trading Puig at this point, unless problems behind the scenes make it impossible for the team to function. That doesn't appear to be the case for the National League West leaders.
Plus, the Dodgers front office is smart enough to know that getting full value for Puig would be close to impossible right now. He's only 24 years old, finished in the top 20 of NL MVP voting in 2013 and 2014 and is signed for the next three years.
The Dodgers can explore dealing Puig after the season, but trading a dynamic young outfielder in the middle of a pennant race doesn't make sense.
