Orlando Summer League 2015 Championship: Score and Twitter Reaction

Alec NathanJul 10, 2015

The NBA's Orlando Summer League closed up shop with a first-place matchup between the Memphis Grizzlies and Orlando Magic (White) Friday afternoon, and the action did not disappoint.

Thanks to extra-time heroics from former Louisville point guard Russ Smith, the Grizzlies emerged with summer league hardware in tow after what can only be described as one of the more interesting overtimes to grace the Orlando hardwood.

Once regulation ended with the sides tied at 73, the overtime period came and went without either side scoring a single point.

Then the fun started.

In summer league, rules dictate that second overtimes are decided in sudden-death fashion. Smith was aware, and he didn't hesitate. After Memphis won the tip at the start of the second extra session, he received the ball from Jordan Adams at the top of the key and proceeded to break down his defender in isolation before nailing a game-winning floater to hand the Grizzlies a 75-73 victory.

Interestingly, Smith faced an identical situation just three days prior when the Grizzlies downed the Magic (Blue), 73-71, in double overtime.

"I was very familiar with the rule," Smith said on July 7, according to Fox Sports Florida's Jason Hall. "I was in a situation last year with the Pelicans' D-League team where if we didn't win it we were going into sudden death. So we ended up winning it off of a throwback. The next time we lost to San Antonio on a sudden death, so I was very familiar with it."

Smith went on to finish Friday's title tilt with 15 points (5-of-14 shooting) and nine assists as three Memphis players finished in double figures, according to the team's official Twitter account:

Entering Friday's finale, Smith was averaging 14.8 points and 5.5 dimes. And as the Memphis Flyer's Kevin Lipe noted, his championship performance capped off a solid showing in Florida:

"I don’t know if can get a look with the Grizz, but for a team that can use scoring, Smith seems like he might be a nice fit off the bench," NBA.com's Lang Whitaker wrote.

To his point, Memphis ranked in the 44th percentile in ball-handler scoring in the pick-and-roll last season at 0.79 points per possession, according to Synergy Sports player-tracking data provided to NBA.com. Unfortunately for Smith, Mike Conley and Beno Udrih are firmly entrenched as the team's one-two punch at point guard, meaning playing time will be hard to come by even if he is able to crack the final roster.

Fresh off their victory, the Grizzlies took to center court and the locker room to celebrate the accomplishment:

As for the Magic, Keith Benson and Chris Singleton topped the charts with 16 points apiece, while former Michigan State standout Keith Appling chipped in 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Former University of Florida floor general Scottie Wilbekin struggled, scoring seven points on 2-of-11 shooting from the field, including 1-of-8 from three.

Memphis wrapped up Orlando Summer League play a perfect 5-0, while the Magic's White squad tallied a 4-1 record following Friday's heartbreaking loss.

Both teams are now officially done with exhibition play this summer. Neither side is slated to compete in the Las Vegas Summer League, which runs from July 10-20.
