Manu Ginobili Announces Return to San Antonio Spurs for 2015-16 Season

Tyler ConwayJul 5, 2015

Manu Ginobili announced on his Twitter account that he would be returning to the San Antonio Spurs to make a run at another championship:

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported the terms of Ginobili's contract are still being worked on.

On July 5, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported the Spurs were "even more determined" to push Ginobili into coming back for one more season with LaMarcus Aldridge now in the fold.

"Pop told us he wanted Tim [Duncan] and me back next season," Ginobili wrote in a recent La Nacion column, per Stein. "Those words make things very difficult. Honestly, if the franchise said they didn't want me or it was time to rebuild and wanted a younger team, that would have made things very easy for me."

Timing may be of the essence here for San Antonio. The Spurs will need to perform cap gymnastics in order to sign Aldridge while fitting new contracts for Duncan, Ginobili, Danny Green and Kawhi Leonard under the cap. Duncan and Ginobili will have to sign their contracts first to lower their cap hold, an artificial charge put on a team's salary cap for its free agents.

The veterans combine for a hold of more than $26 million, per Spotrac, which ties up enough room to make signing Aldridge outright impossible. Ginobili and Duncan will have to agree to take massive pay cuts to make all of this possible and sign their deals before Aldridge "officially" agrees. Green and Leonard have agreed to contracts with average annual salaries higher than their cap hold, so they will sign after Aldridge.
