Newton, Panthers Agree to New Deal

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported details of Newton's contract extension:
Newton, 26, was due to make $14.67 million in 2015, the salary of his fifth-year option on his rookie contract. Jonathan Jones and Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer reported that the deal could average upward of $20 million per year.
The two sides talked about a contract extension for months without much movement. Person indicated Newton initially wanted to allow players such as Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson to sign new contracts, thereby setting the market for quarterback deals.
"I say this with the most humility, but I don't think nobody has ever been who I'm trying to be," Newton recently told Morgan Fogarty of WCCB in Charlotte. "Nobody has the size, nobody has the speed, nobody has the arm strength, nobody had the intangibles that I've had."
There are some valid concerns about Newton's progression as a passer—he set a career low in quarterback rating and ranked 33rd at his position in Football Outsiders' DVOA metric this past season—but the Panthers had no real incentive to draw out negotiations. Newton's price would have continued to rise as more contemporaries sign their contracts. With even average starters such as Andy Dalton landing deals that approach nine figures, it wouldn't have been beneficial for Carolina to lowball Newton.
