2015 Belmont Stakes Field: Latest Odds, Lineup and Pedigree for All Entries
American Pharoah's quest to become the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 37 years will come to an end one way or another following the 2015 Belmont Stakes on June 6. Will the colt make history, or will he leave empty-handed just like 13 previous horses that entered Belmont Park with the same aspirations since Affirmed last achieved the feat in 1978?
While there's certainly no doubting Pharoah's sheer talent, he'll be dealing with plenty of new obstacles in the Triple Crown's third jewel. Not only will he need to muster up the stamina to race for the third time in five weeks, but he'll need to do so in a 1 ½-mile raceāthe longest of his careerāagainst some well-rested opposition.

American Pharoah

A horse that needs no introduction, Pharoah was absolutely brilliant in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. In each of those races, the colt overcame some unfavorable starting positions to win in convincing fashion against strong fields.
At both Churchill Downs and Pimlico, Pharoah showed an excellent ability to start quickly and accelerate early without relinquishing too much stamina. After maintaining his position near the front of the pack for the majority of those races, he also displayed his impressive ability to run hard down the final stretch and close with authority.
Now, entering the Belmont Stakes, fatigue is the biggest concern for fans and horse racing enthusiasts. Well, trainer Bob Baffert shed a bit of light on the current situation during an interview with Dan Wolken ofĀ USA Today:
"It's about the horse now. Is he good enough to do it? It always happens to me when I go up (to New York). I start feeling pressure because I don't want to let those fans down. Every year, people say, 'This is the one.' So hopefully, maybe this is the one. We don't know. All indications show me he's doing well.
"
Baffert seems confident in the way Pharoah has looked in his pre-race workouts. At this point, that's the best piece of news we could ask for as we wait and see if he has what it takes to successfully complete his Triple Crown run.
Frosted

Frosted is an interesting horse entering the Belmont Stakes. In four 2015 races, he only emerged victorious once, also notching two fourth-place finishes and a runner-up. One of those fourth-place showings was in the Kentucky Derbyāa race that showed the both the horse's biggest strength and biggest weakness.
The colt's weakness is his inability to get off to a blazing start. He fell way behind in the onset of the Kentucky Derby despite a decent starting position. Although, his biggest strength soon followed, as with roughly ½ mile remaining, Frosted began to run, making up an incredible amount of ground to finish fourth.
Frosted's inability to start quickly wasn't only on display in the Kentucky Derby. The colt had the same difficulty in his Wood Memorial victory. Take a look for yourself:
Heading into the Belmont Stakes, getting a clean break out of the gate will be Frosted's big test. Mike Welsch of DRF.com already noted how well the colt has been running in his pre-race workouts: "This was the best I've seen of Frosted either prior to or since the Derby." We should expect Frosted to give Pharoah a run for his money pending a solid start to the race.
Materiality

One of four horses held out of the Preakness Stakes by trainer Todd Pletcher, Materiality enters the Belmont Stakes with fresh legs. This colt was in a similar situation to Frosted in the Derby, as he didn't get the best of starts but went on to make up plenty of ground, finishing in sixth place.
Although, unlike Frosted, Materiality has shown the ability to start quickly in the past. Take a look at his sparkling run from start to finish in this year's Florida Derby:
While Frosted may be a better closing horse, Materiality does have enough finishing speed to be a big factor down the final stretch. Apparently, the colt is in great shape heading into the Belmont Stakes. Here's what Pletcher had to say about his horse during an interview with Jonathan Lintner of the Courier-Journal:
"I thought [Materiality] worked very well. You know, he's the kind of horse who kind of does what his workmate does. It was a very good, progressive breeze, picking it up as they went along, with a very strong gallop out. [Materiality] came back and he wasn't even blowing. He just took it all very well.
"
Holding Materiality out of the Preakness only makes the colt even more dangerous in the Belmont Stakes, and Pletcher's plan seems to be working, as the horse isn't showing any signs of fatigue during pre-race workouts. This is certainly another horse to keep a keen eye on in the days leading up to the Triple Crown's third jewel.
